Took my '04 4runner out on it's first road trip yesterday, and wow, the new V6 they added this year was amazing! It had lots of power, and shifted so smoothly. I have been taking mostly my wife's '03 Acura MDX, or my '00 Jeep (traded in thank goodness), and they don't even compare with how the runner handled. I would guess that the Pilot would be similar to the MDX and would recommend you compare them on the highway!

The Pilot is MUCH better on the highway. Plus it has the 3rd row seat if you think you'll ever need it (Yes, adults can ride back there on short drives. Kids can ride there for longer.) It also has a larger cargo areo. It is w i d e r.
The 4Runner is a true truck. It beats the Pilot hands down for off-roading. It has a full, traditional frame. If you need to tow more than 4500 lbs, the 4Runner can handle it.
Drive both and get the one you like best. Both are quality vehicles.
