Hood breather scoop mod

I know that the hood scoop on the TE is "cosmetic only" but I was thinking that it would be cool if not even somewhat beneficial to engine cooling to open it up so it would truly catch air. Maybe by cutting out the little squares in the plastic piece or perhaps someone already makes a replacement part that actually allows air-flow.

A former "old school racing" buddy of mine said it would make no difference but I just think it would look less dorky if it actually functioned in some way.
Anybody else had this thought or should I just "let it go"...?

I'll probably get flamed for this, there's a lot of TE lovers out there...

Without doubt, the TEs are the most capable version of the 4Runner, but I think their styling is fugly. And the WORST part about them is that faux hood scoop. At least if you cut it out, so it appears to do something, you wouldn't have to be embarrassed by it. I say go for it.

Funny, just the other day I had a neighbor tell me that he thought the scoop on my TE was very cool and always thought the same of 4th gen sport models. I happen to agree with the neighbor.

I own a silver TE, was thinking about pulling the scoop off and painting it flat black to match the trim, i think it'd compliment the looks pretty well.

The TE is styled like a true SUV, keying on "Sport Utility". It looks like a vehicle with a rugged purpose in mind. A friend of mines thinks my SR5 looks like an executive vehicle. If only the US had the Canadian version. :crybaby:

I too like the look and functionality of the TE. If it weren't for those meddling kids, I'd have one.
What are the differences between US/Canadian versions of the LTD. I know up here they don't come with the Limited badge, what are the other differences?

THIS!!!! I love the TE look, scoop and all. Eventually, I'll 'TE' the exterior of my SR5 with the bumpers, fender flares, rockers, headlight housings, and taillight housings.

Not a fan of "body colored" anything...I do wish they had gone even further and made the bumpers, etc functionally more rugged

I also have a Silver TE and was looking at doing the same thing. I think that would look good too. I would propbably try to match the black to the fender, if thats mat black, it could be on step up from mat black. I like the way you are thinking.

Just wrap it .....3M matte black vinyl is a pretty close match.Cost less the $20 for a DIY and is pretty easy with the new 3M vinyls that use heat instead of a wet app. 3M Scotchprint 1080 Matte Black Vinyl Wrap 12"x24" | eBay

You may need 24" x 24", as I don't know the scoop measurements, and will have to call them to get 24x24. They do have a store online.

And if you don't like it or want to bring it back to original,you can take it off.

what about opening the scoop and tying it into the stock airbox? I would love to do something with it on my '11 TE.
