Hood scoop?

I have been bored at work lately (yep call center inbound sales)
And have been thinking of under hood temps and how this engine bay is probably the worste when it comes to temps poor airflow in the front poor extraction... So when i got home tonight measured out center on my hood and started playing with card board...

Its not exactly what i want but the idea is there... I would make it out of fiberglass and reenforce it properly... I would want more of a sweep from front to back and more cure from the sides in (reference the scoop on the sti but with taper like i have with cardboard)

Yeah i see your point but at the same time in my head i can visualize pulling it off the point isnt to scoop on top of a scoop and function is more so important then form... Wait what thats wrong..

Its a piece of scrap cardboard what more you expect louvers?

I would want it longer of course front to back and sunk down further to the hood more organically as if it belongs there..
 
OK, so I have a question. Maybe the engineers and those smarter than me can explain it if I'm not thinking right.

If the goal is to reduce under hood temps, wouldn't it be more efficient to face the scoop with the opening towards the windshield? As you're driving, air coming through the radiator would push the air/heat out through the scoop, and the airstream going over the hood/windshield would also help "pull" the air out (unless there is turbulence created in that area that I'm not aware of).

Seems to me, facing the scoop forward would be going against the intended result - and would be just pushing more air into the engine compartment without helping to evacuate any heat. A forward facing hood scoop would be beneficial if ducted to force air into the intake, but not so much for extracting heat from under the hood.

I thought you said you wernt an engineer? But yep thats the theory toyota failed at...

I have been playing with the ideal of using spacers at the rear of the hood for this (between hood and hinges) raising the hood in theory about 1/2"

Some people spacer the hood in back. Another thing you can do to reduce temps in hot areas is louvre it.

There are companies that will louvre your hood, or there are some (rather ugly) bolt on ones you can buy.

For heat reduction the louvres might be the way to go.
