hey, thanks, ya i was on a different site and #18 was about $300 and there were a ton of parts to choose prom, but that shows all of the parts for $101. thanks and i still have paint left over from the repaint.

Did you even read the 3 posts about putting mesh in there. That is what me and duhockey were getting at, putting mesh in the scoop will look like the stock cover that is in the back and no one will know the difference.

i doubt it will look just like stock....but i really doubt the stock piece will look $100-150 better

This is a picture before the scoop insert was assembled and everything. Notice that without it, theres still a large portion below the scoop that it fills in.

A better idea would be to use all of the stock insert stuff but just cut off a portion of the back of insert. See, the insert sticks pretty far inside the hood. You could always cut it. Sorry, this is the best picture I can provide right now, notice is taped down via the part that sticks into the hood.

Hmm, yeah, I can see what you are talking about, the "scoop insert" is how much?? is that what everyone is saying is only available stock? does it come as a kit with everything including the backing etc? or is it multiple parts?? I dont know why Im interested, I wasnt planning on doing this at all! :lol:
I guess I figure with all the stuff people have fabbed up for the 4runners, a small piece of plastic like a scoop insert seems like an easy thing to fab up with a bit of mesh and furnace filter behind it. I cant imagine paying 150$ for the scoop insert stuff when Im pretty sure it can be fabbed nicely for less...
but you have been thru this process, what do you think?? Im just speculating.

It comes separately but the guys at toyota order it all at once as if it was a kit. The insert itself was the majority of the cost, at least 125 of it. The rest was misc hardware, plates, and mesh. I lost my order sheet so I dont know what i paid or part numbers. I'd take a pic for better showing of what I mean when I said to cut it but my 4Runner is in my garage not running right now, I'm at work with my C230. I'll have to get a photo later.
As far as availability, I searched all over both for hoods and inserts. The best price on the hood was the 56 from certifit. the scoop I couldn't find anywhere but the Toyota dealership. The certifit clerk told me that most people don't bother with the sport hoods, even at the cheap price, because they don't want to spend the money on the insert.

Really? so without all that mounting crap for the insert the regular scoop looks like shit? All you need is an angle grinder and a ruler.

Has anyone tried the bone yards for a smashed hood scoope'd 4Runner, Tacoma, etc...for just the insert & hardware?
I would imagine the 'yard wouldn't mind getting some $$$ out of a smashed hood that is just scrap metal to them.
I assume the insert / hardware would be the same as on a Tacoma, Rav4, etc...any thing else Toyota put a scoop on?

So guys, I'm heading back to St. Louis next week for the summer (3 days left in the semester!) and I'm going to head over to Certifit and see if I can get a 99' sport hood with the scoop for my 98' SR5. I've been wanting to get a sport hood ever since I purchased my 4runner so finally gonna do that. I'll keep everyone posted on how it goes and post up some pics whenever I get it! I'm stoaked! :bluejump:
