This is going to get very painful. When the tide goes out, you find out who's been swimming naked.

Unfortunately I think a lot of people, news media, even economists who should know better, but appear to prove over and over that they know very little - will blame the virus for the economic collapse. And that's really just the trigger. The economic system was way into bubble territory already. It was destined for a massive collapse when looking at valuations, artificially low interest rates, excessive debt, etc. I thought it would happen a year or two ago. I took everything I have out of the market mid 2018 and have been simply sitting on the sidelines and arranging my work for a recession/depression since then. The virus will probably make it worse. But the bubble was set in motion a long time ago. The Federal Reserve deserves the lion's share of the responsibility for the position we're in now. They knew what they were doing. They knew the risks of their monetary policy and how it would leave us "swimming naked" as Buffet puts it. And they didn't care.

The only solution will be a bailout of small businesses this time by providing some sort of incentive to get the business and it's employees to get back to work quickly after this crisis is handled which is going to be a monumental task. If the infection rate and death toll is anything like Italy or iran all bets are off.

If we social distance now and get this under control quickly, the I believe that the economy will come back - perhaps even stronger as we may be bringing some manufacturing back to the US from China.
 
I went to the grocery store today to pick up some things for dinner.
Store had stock of all things the hoarders had cleaned out - TP, dried beans, canned goods, water, frozen veggies, ...

Everything appeared back to normal at that store with the exception of lower volume of shoppers for a Saturday morning. That and far fewer vehicles on the roads - it was a nice sunny day to take the 4Runner out.

This falls squarely in my area of expertise. Not only do we need to bring manufacturing back to the US (or to "friendly" countries - if we can still find any), but we need to make sure that we aren't relying on any sole-sourcing for CI-KR (critical infrastructure, key resources) and other essential items and services. Given the size of our country and the possibility of natural catastrophes, we need to assure that critical manufacturing is east and west of the Mississippi.

We are a resilient and innovative nation. We will come out of this stronger.

What precisely is your area of expertise?

Please don't read this question as some sort of "challenge", or a crass attempt to "call you out". I'm genuinely interested.

Though I posses extensive knowledge in certain fields, none of them are particularly germane to the current crisis. It's the main reason I've avoided responding to this thread.

Valid question. My area of expertise is in National Security and the government side of business continuity - with a side helping of automotive industry regulation a few years ago.

Business continuity is how to continue operations under all circumstances and we have had a pandemic plan in place since we drafted the first national plan in 2005. In this instance, however, we were late in dusting off the plans as a nation. Some Department & Agencies recognized this upcoming threat in early December and started taking action early.

Some of us decided to get smart on the actual threat and what best practices can be learned from other countries so we do not need to repeat their mistakes. Yesterday, a European politician asked in the greatest threat to humanity was COVID19 or the stupidity of a few individuals that are looking at this as a joke and are having "Corona parties" or spitting on people.

It may be more likely the greatest threat is from those capitalizing off mass hysteria and economic damage.

We need to get over the politics of this and attack the threat as a nation and a global community. There'll be plenty of time to point fingers and implement lessons learned when this is over.

Right now, everybody needs to do what they can to exercise social distancing to slow the spread to a level that the medical system can handle.

Agreed. The middle of the battle is the wrong place and time to bicker and point fingers. That stuff serves no purpose other than to divide. Right now, we each need to do our part. That includes being a team player and encouraging one another.

AAAAAAAARGGGGHHHHH, I'm going to run out in 372 days! The sky is falling.....

One of the apps on Android yesterday popped up an ad for "Charmix" toilet paper, complete with that stupid bear and everything.
