There ain't no numbers from past years. That's why it is called the novel coronavirus.

Here are the Germany numbers and some Italy numbers from yesterday. Austria numbers. As a side note, the virus affects men (55%) more than women (45%), so little children like you don't need to worry, but your daddy who is buying you a 4R might be at greater risk.
 
I've known Dr. Fauci for years and he is on TV right now (losing his voice) and made a few important comments:

We don't know exactly how this is transferred
We don't know how this will mutate
We don't know how long this will go on

and that is why it is a problem. If we don't slow this thing down by social distancing and basic hygiene now, then we'll be Italy.
 
I’d like to think that the great majority of forum members are highly intelligent. After all, they own 4Runners! And lots of us have a scientific background, whether by education, experience, on-the-job training, or we if don’t have that background we critically read and study a variety of authoritative sources to stay on top of science, technology, and medicine. Because we are interested, we read and strive to understand. If we don’t work in the science field we dabble in it as a hobby or by necessity to fix our machines or electronics. You don’t have to have an advanced degree to be in the ranks considered to be scientists.

And every one of us is a user of highly advanced technology that was developed for us through: Science.

So how about we listen to the people whose science expertise is medicine and virology, and take their advice and the advice of our government leaders, in order to save lives. Just in case they are correct.

Most politicians are corrupt. News organizations are trash. Everything gets politicized by so called authoritative sources these days.

Follow common sense? Sure.

Believe the hype cycle and follow blindly? No.

For you "this is just like the flu" types, when was the last time you heard your family and friends who are doctors, PAs, or nurses stressing out about the flu and people getting put on ventilators because of the flu?

Sadly, that's just the general mindset of some people we come across here in Colorado. You should see the content on Nextdoor. It amazes me how they all seem to lack some sort of common sense yet have some sort of entitlement to go with it.

Parents allowing their kids door to door to sell lemonade yesterday? Check. Parents defending and threatening other people who called them out? Check. Only in Colorado!

I'm sorry to be direct, and you may not have intended it, but this is a call to obediently follow an authoritarian take over, under the threat of "saving lives."

Better safe than sorry, arm ourselves with facts and data and not confirmation bias, and beware of potential opportunistic grifters (government leaders, so called experts, etc) skimming money into their pockets, driving mass hysteria, expanding the scope of government control and damaging the economy.

that wont happen. and this right here is part of the fear mongering. they were in bad shape long before this shit happened. they also have a much larger elderly population. there is no way you can compare Italy to the US in regards to this virus.

I've been trying to balance my emotions on this aspect of it. On one hand, I don't have a better solution to slow the spread and allow care facilities the chance to keep from being overwhelmed to dangerous capacities. People should be smart enough to behave in ways to contain/prevent spread of disease, but as a whole we just aren't.

At the same time I have been alarmed by the sudden realization of just how quickly and relatively effortlessly our freedom can be (in some areas has been) taken away. At 45, this is the first time I've ever witnessed such actions and felt the possibility that with a few short words, I may no longer be free - for an indefinite length of time. It's a psychological conundrum I find quite disturbing.

Some will say it's paranoia and I should trust the government, but should I? Do I? Honestly, no I don't. Perhaps that would be different if they had a track record of working together to make this country better. Instead, what I've witnessed in my lifetime is ruthless partisan politics. Smear campaigns and intense fights to block "the other team" from scoring any victory that might help them get re-elected. They have shown to be petty, vindictive, corrupt, and disrespectful (towards each other and fellow Americans). Yet I'm supposed to trust that THESE people have MY best interest (or even the best interest of the country as a whole) in mind? Sorry, I am skeptical and really don't have that kind of trust/faith in them. I really do hope my anxiety is unwarranted.

Right now we are discussing how to allocate ventilators. If we have a rapid increase in cases here like in Italy, then the local ERs will run out of capacity. Cases in NY have nearly doubled to 2382 with 23% going into hospital.

That is actually a very good question because of all the past bickering, but the governments (local, state and Federal) are made up in large part of non-partisan professionals that don't care about politics.

We only see the bickering on TV but we never see the work that goes on the background. I've served under a whole slew of administrations and my job was never influenced by the crap going on. I've always had to fight for funding, but ultimately always got what I needed - that was the same under a Democrat or Republican administration. That is the way the system is designed to work.

That would be ideal, but in reality there is plenty of evidence over the past umpteen years of many departments and agencies being politicized.
