That's good news that she is well now. I do have to ask if you know? Now that she has recovered does it give her some sort of resistance to another covid infection or is she still susceptible to it? In other words, Does one build immunity to the virus after being infected and surviving?

I've seen news articles like this. People who recovered do seem to have antibodies. Can you catch the coronavirus twice? You'''ll probably be immune — for some time, at least
That's a very good question with a not so good answer.

We have anecdotal evidence in the US and Europe that there will be immunity and there are some trials on using plasma from recovered patients on patients with early symptoms. However, there are reports from China that there have been reinfections - but then again you can't trust a damn thing coming from China - they are now "modifying" their numbers because they didn't count people with mild or no symptoms.

Speaking of numbers, here are some stats that I've yet to see analyzed in this manner. I wonder how these compare to the seasonal flu data.

And as far as food choices, I want to say "sounds about white" but that would be generalizing as some of us Americans aren't as sheltered and do eat more than just steaks, burgers, and chicken. Times like these really do show how close minded and parochial our culture is. People must not get out much. But I don't judge. We are lucky to be selective here with food choices in the states but some Asian countries didn't or still don't have that privilege. We forget that China isn't that far removed from the third world and some areas are still that. It's not like the same couldn't be said for us Americans who consume junk food and fast food regularly even if it's the norm here. That's just as nasty to some.

Yes, the numbers are interesting, but the only ones that make sense (for a comparison) is # of patients/deaths per million. The # of patients really refers to how well a country tests, but the number of deaths are a number to compare - although you need to consider where different countries are on the curve and you need to remove some numbers entirely because they are flat out lies - China, Iran, Russia etc. - and weigh countries that have done significant testing more - S.Korea, Singapore and now (very slowly) Germany and the US.

The WSJ had a very sobering article on Italy - tying the massive outbreak in Italy and Spain to a soccer game. Here is the link (you need to be a subscriber) and an excerpt from the article:

"Everything was crowded. The roads, all the surroundings, the stadium," said Mr. Pontiggia, 55, who took nearly three hours to complete the 35-mile drive to the San Siro. "It was practically a whole town moving to Milan. It was amazing, incredible."

It was also a contagion disaster. Atalanta fans were walking into a petri dish. In a single mass gathering, they were about to prove how sporting events could end up at the center of a global pandemic.

By then, the coronavirus was spreading through untold numbers of asymptomatic carriers. Forty thousand bouncing, hugging soccer fans were the perfect vector: Experts are now convinced that Atalanta's 4-1 win over Valencia was a catalyst in turning Lombardy into one of the worst-hit regions on the planet. The coronavirus was so present inside the stadium that night that once Valencia returned to Spain, 35% of its traveling squad eventually tested positive.

"Two weeks after Feb. 19, there was an incredible explosion of cases," said Dr. Francesco Le Foche, an immunologist in charge of infectious disease at Policlinico Umberto I in Rome. "The match played a huge role in disseminating coronavirus throughout Lombardy and in Bergamo in particular."

I suspect that the majority of fans were younger and felt "fine".

We're both on the same page when it comes to which countries have data that needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Also been trying to understand other factors such as the different methods of enforcing quarantine and social distancing by country or culture and other obscure details.

Thanks for the link. I am a subscriber to WSJ and the article is my list of reads this evening.

34% deaths? Im calling bullshit.
That number is actually correct - kind-of.

Closed cases are those reported "recovered" and "fatalities". Deaths are normally a mostly accurate number while the recoveries are often not reported correctly (or at all). In addition, during the beginning of a pandemic/epidemic, you will have a greater number of deaths before recoveries "catch up".

That number is virtually meaningless until the fat lady has sung.

So the Wuhan Pneumonia has no cure except the antivirals you body produces when it is infected.

Vaccine is a year away

Some drugs and some drugs that that are untested may reduce the symptoms.

1-2% mortality overall of mostly old and otherwise poor prehospital functional status

Quarantining slows but does not stop progression in the population.

Hospitals have limited number of beds and equipment

Post long term ventilation mortality rate is high.
Long-term mortality and quality of life after prolonged mechanical ventilation. - PubMed - NCBI

So in a nutshell everyone will get it eventually, quarantining slows the progression but does not stop it. Quarantining reduces the number of patients at the hospitals at one time. Quarantining has a severe negative impact on the economy and wealth.

Here's a video from a guy who runs a youtube channel of his vehicle recovery & towing company out of Long Beach, WA, just outlining some good ideas about addressing what needs to happen to address the joblessness right now. Some great ideas.

Check out his channel too it's lots of beach & road recoveries of various types. Very informative.

His suggestions of a 3 month sabbatical on all loan payments etc. and no penalties.
Never will happen. It makes too much sense.

Here is what MAGA has given us: Dr. Anthony Fauci forced to beef up security as death threats increase - CNNPolitics

*seems quite relevant as folks here in this thread are calling him out as part of the "hoax" and politically motivated.

You're being overly dramatic, unreasonable, and unfair :der:

Besides, most if not all of the Jussie Smollett type attacks have been proven hoaxes.

On the other hand, Rand Paul has a few broken ribs and Steve Scalise has a gunshot wound to show you.

Mostly ok on everything and where I live, things are mostly normal, except I keep 10 feet from folks when out walking and about half of folks are wearing masks, gloves, or both. I'm fortunate to be working from home.

If there's one thing this has taught me is to incrementally become more of a prepper. I have always been a slight prepper; two weeks of food and water, candles, flashlights, backup power to charge phones, firearms, etc. Hurricane Sandy type prepping. I think after wu flu, I'm going to be keeping about 2 months of food and water plus moving to the country.

So you're saying the US Marshalls office shouldn't take it seriously because the threat is from the political right?

I mean I'd like to believe that we're not promoting targeted violence, are we?

People wearing gloves out & about are idiots for the most part. They touch EVERYTHING with gloves on including phones, THEN they discard the gloves & touch it along W/items THEY handled W/Gloves!! Just use common sense. Wash your hand or you hand sanitizer AFTER touching things & before touching things you WILL use i.e. the STEERING Wheel, Shift Knob KEY FOB!!! I've been using hand sanitizer for Years because I read long ago GAS Pumps & ATM's ARE THE Worst for spreading germ/viruses!! Common Sense AGAIN People JEEZ!!!!:wow2::rtfm::attention::rant::snacker:
