Probably a bad idea posting in here, but I have been following this thread for a bit, while most of it's a shit show, there are some good points made, on both sides...

I doubt we'll ever truly know, but one other "cost" associated with this shutdown is the rise in suicide and domestic violence, just to name two, during this stay-at-home, shut-the-whole-world-down period. (Sorry if I missed a previous post on this matter)

No, I'm not a first responder, but while talking to one of my friends who is on the front lines, he's noticed a marked rise in those calls. Which got me wondering.

Would be interesting to see just how much "good" was done by offsetting lives saved from the virus (actual number, which we'll also probably never know) with the increase in cases and fatalities of those other areas mentioned above.

Don't have any empirical data, fact links or anything like that, just thinking out loud... I'm over the whole thing anyway.

I couldn’t read the wapo article as it has a big paywall type banner over the article.

The blog reads like “according to sources close to someone who knows someone.”

I don’t know how one can dive into that position fairly without acknowledging the formation of a task force and starting to close flights from China in Jan. Well, we can speculate why. . .

This btw is part of what will be the next massive market messaging campaign from major “news” organizations.

Reminds me of football. Team draws up offense plays, practices until muscle memory takes over, everyone knows exactly what to do and where to be, but when the whistle blows in the game it all goes haywire sometimes.

Unfortunately you're right. Not just limited to the US either. Suicide attempts and domestic violence are up worldwide.

Very serious situation, but just to lighten this thread up a bit...

Yes it is my responsibility but it is also everyones responsibility to not go the **** out when they are sick? But do people still go out while sick and spread this shit? Of course they do how the hell do you think its spreading?

Do you realize how much parents just send their kid to school sick? Am I supposed to go and stand there and make sure every damn kid is not sick for the day?

It starts with the knuckle heads that spread the shit.

Just curious... how long are we gonna keep everyone locked down? How many jobs, companies, and thus tax revenue can we bear to lose? The virus isn't going away. So we've contained it, sort of (maybe), for now. Even if a Covid-shot comes available, shots are not 100% guaranteed to prevent someone from catching what they've been innoculated for - and certainly doesn't stop one from transferring the virus. How do we move forward - realistically (no utopian dreams of everyone magically doing what's right on their own because we all know that won't happen)?

Open question to everyone, not intended to put the person I quoted on the spot.

We have two groups of people;

1) Those who fear Covid and think any and all costs are worth it to avoid/defeat it, and

2) Those that fear the economic loss for generations to come and feel the risk of losing our country (our way of life) > potential cost in loss of life due to the virus.

We constantly put a price on our lives. For example, 39,000 people died in car wrecks in 2019 (National Safety Council estimate). But we accept those deaths in exchange for all the convenience the automobile brings to our lives - we don't ban cars and force everyone to not drive. Hell, we don't even regulate max speed a vehicle is allowed to attain from factory - why do we allow the sale of street legal cars that can run over 100 mph (some over 200 mph) when the highest lawful limit I know of in this country is 85?

Estimates for 2020 from the American Cancer Society suggest around 135,000 people will die from lung cancer, yet we can still buy cigarettes - we don't ban them from being made. Wouldn't that make sense if we didn't put a price on lives (tax revenue and jobs from tobacco sales)?

According to the American Diabetes association, 270,000 people in 2017 had diabetes listed as a contributing factor to death (with 83,000 of those listed as the underlying cause being diabetes). Cardiovascular disease claimed 840,000 lives in 2016. Despite nearly a million deaths a year from diabetes and cardiac disease, healthy food is more expensive than the cheaper and more prevalent mass produced foods made of fat, sugar, sodium, and unpronounceable man made chemicals. We don't ban Doritos and Coke because they're tasty and they make too much money for corporat shareholders and again tax coffers (not to mention what pharmaceutical companies and hospitals rake in treating these diseases). Also, we are not given adequate time off to tend to medical issues/sickness properly, or to relax and release tension from our busy schedules. Nor are many in this country paid a wage that helps them sleep easy at night despite puttimg in "full time" hours. No, we can't have that it would affect the bottom line profits and productivity! After all if I'm paying an employee $5 an hour to be in that seat he damn well better be there whenever I want him there, to hell with his family/health needs! Right?

So what's the price for Covid, and how come with this one specific virus we are suddenly so willing to pay any and all costs and go to such great lengths to save lives when we routinely casually discard massive numbers of deaths and preventable illness caused by other things? We can force everyone into house arrest and destroy our whole economy for Covid, but we can't shut down big tobacco? Or make it more affordable/practical to provide and eat healthier foods? Or take some profits from shareholders and corporate execs and pay the little people more to live on? Or allot more sick/vacation time and/or flexible work schedules? Or provide better preventive health care? Or mandate our automobiles be slower/safer? So many things we could already be doing to save lives, but the price has been deemed too high and too inconvenient to implement any meaningful changes... except for Covid19.
 
I work in the healthcare industry as a pill pusher and here is my experience on the matter:

I've known people and colleagues who've contracted covid19 and most people push through this with no problems at all. However, I know of a coworker personally that literally lost pretty much every family member over 30 years of age to this virus. Sure this coworker didn't take care of herself or her family, and as a result had so many underlying conditions that the rest of my employees and myself knew if she or her family contracted covid19, there was a good chance that it would destroy her family and it did.

What bugs me is she also didn't take this epidemic seriously and she works IN THE HEALTHCARE FIELD (so she had plenty of warning), and now she is literally alone in the world now. Nobody should have to go through this, but she learned a valuable lesson in life. It's her responsibility to protect herself and her family, and that every decision she makes, she will have to own it in some way, shape or form. (everything from poor health and dietary choices, and for choosing not to use PPE off the clock, and for choosing to go to clubs and bars when she shouldn't have). The rumor at my work is she brought the virus home, and it killed everyone in her family that lived with her. So my coworker hasn't shown up for work for 2 weeks because she is now in deep depression and probably isn't going to come back to work. It's unfortunate..

I'm all for personal freedom, but use common sense out there. You may be a healthy individual and you will probably push through this if you contract this virus, but some of your loved ones may not be as lucky as you.

So be smart out there, if you want to go out there and assemble and protect your right to assemble, at least do yourself a favor and protect yourself so you can protect your family that may not be as healthy as yourself.

I'm pretty much certain that this virus isn't going away anytime soon, and businesses will have to reopen, and we will have to adjust to a new normal were PPE will be a part of everyday life unless a vaccine is developed. However, Isolation isn't the answer either.

I have to agree with all you say. But we’re looking at this from the perspective of a Monday morning quarterback. This new unknown virus came on fast and strong, scared the crap out of the world, disease was spreading fast, lots of people were dying, and everyone reacted quickly, perhaps overreacted, in the most panicked conservative way: shut it all down and hide until the virus goes away.

Imagine driving your car on a snowy highway at night and a deer runs out in front of you. You hit the brakes and swerve to avoid it but you go into a spin. You spin out of control, three or four times, bash into a snowbank and cream one side of your vehicle, but you’re ok. Later the insurance adjuster says you have so much damage you may have to total it, at a substantial loss to you.
You mull it over and say: damn, now that I think about it, that wasn’t a very big deer, just a small doe. The way it was running it would have just grazed my passenger fender. Why didn’t I just hit it, the damage would have been much less. Well, we’re only in the first or second spin. Can’t stop it, just gotta ride it out now and deal with the repercussions after we bash into that snowbank.
