Hope I made the right choice

So my wife and I walked in to a dealership looking for a tundra, however, they had a demo Trail edition 4runner. It was a magnetic gray with sticker of $40,800. (kdss, nav package) 4,800miles

Because it was a demo the sales manager came down to $38,200 + tax +title. Needless to say this got my interest. So we started talking interest rates. It came down to 3.99% for 60 months

To me this sounds like a good deal but something just doesn't sit right in the pit of my stomach so we decided to politely decline.

I just wanted to put this out there and see what your thoughts were.

Go to Edmunds.com to get the invoice of the 4Runner you are looking at.

They are only giving you a $2600 discount. You should be able to do better on one with lower miles. The one thing to consider is availability of the trail edition in your area. Based on what this forum is saying, some parts of the country don't have a lot of TEs on the lot, while others do.

If you are open to an SR5, limited or Trail (based on availability in your area) then your ability to get a deeper discount increases.

Call the Internet Departments of some nearby dealers and get some quotes.

Good Luck!

You're going to get varying opinions here about market value... I guess $2600 off sticker is reasonable given the apparent desire-ability of the Trail Ed... but I'm surprised its not more given the mileage.

Go Arapahoe offered me $500 over invoice a few weeks ago, which isn't bad. I'm waiting to see if I can do better @ the end of this month - and I'm also curious to see if Toyota will make any adjustments to their incentives given their continued negative press and issues. I know, that's a crap shoot.

I'm a bit surprised by all the hype, especially on this board. I understand, new - highly desirable vehicle... blah, blah, blah... but wow.

Just for fun... I had got a quote yesterday for an '10 Lexus RX w/ a sticker of $49K, the dealer's first out of the box offer was $45K. It's also a new redesigned vehicle, with granted, higher build numbers than the 4Runner. The telling thing on this was... the monthly lease dollars were almost identical to a '10 4R Limited. I understand residuals, but I wonder if ALG is dropping residuals on Toyota's because of all this negative press. I hope not.

Regardless... may the force be with you as you try to get the best deal possible.

walk away. i got a quote for a demo trail a few weeks ago for $32,995. it had 9k miles, however, but that $5200 difference is still massive. (i declined, by the way.)

if you want it they'll sell you that truck for much less. unless they're arrogant and/or stupid.

ps: you're much better off using the internet to get pricing than you'll ever be walking into a dealership cold. unless you're a hostage negotiator in your day job or something. :D

See this is more of what I thought could be out there. I appreciate the input. The 4runner is in Colorado so demand is through the roof but in my opinion its a used vehicle(essentially).

I don't know what part of Colorado you are in but I know that Pueblo Toyota will sell you one for $500 over invoice if you go through the internet sales manager. They used to have a red one in but can easily trade for a gray one. Go Toyota has several TE listed as in or on the way, although most don't have the NAV, just KDSS.

I think 2600 would be a good deal on a new model but a Demo is a used car anyway you look at it and should be priced accordingly.. While shopping for my 4r I was looking at a Demo Tahoe MSRP 42595. Had them down to 31k.

Also remember that almost everyone that test drives a demo floors it to test the acceleration and is almost never broken in properly.

I contacted Pueblo Toyota - but never heard back from them. Will try again... thanks for sharing the info.

I paid $38,500 +taxes for a brand new one. You did the right thing in walking away. Considering everything that demo models go through, I would say it's overpriced by $5k, as it is technically a "used" car and has to be sold as such.

Just curious if this is a good deal. I was quoted a price of $35,817 on a TE 4R with silver with black/graphite interior, equipped additionally with carpet floor mats, convenience package, stereo upgrade, back up camera, and KDSS. Sticker price of $38,454.

What are you thoughts?

Figure out the invoice price for that vehicle (Edmunds.com, etc), add $500, then add title/tags/taxes in addition to whatever other mandatory fees for your area. Take that figure back to the sales person and tell them you'll take it for that figure, OTD (out the door). This will get you the 4R for $500 over invoice and basically eliminate other profit tactics like adding miscellaneous fees and other charges. If it's on their lot they want it gone. This is all under the assumption that you're referring to a new 4R, with under 10 miles on the odometer.

I personally wouldn't buy demo models. They get tested by a ton of people and stealer employees get to drive it gosh knows how...

Seems to be a pretty good deal. Looks like invoice price is right around 35,000. Now for the stupid question, how can i figure out title, tags, and taxes? I'm pretty new to the car buying market and im just wanting to make sure im not getting shafted

Every states tax is different. Here's an example for denver county residents

Motor Vehicle - Frquently Asked Questions

For Texas you only pay 6.25%.

Just google (Enter your state) auto sales tax rate. That should get you started in the right direction. Then check the states department of motor vehicles for new auto title and license fees.

My dealer didn't charge any documentation fees. Some do some don't.

Buying a demo doesn't bother me, but we are fast nearing the end of the "hard to get and will only sell for msrp" stage even on the trail editions. After doing some poking around nearly every dealership in colorado has one with more due within a week.

I thought it was funny how fast the supply can change.

I politely told this dealer if they wanted to consider a couple thousand (meaning 1-2) off, then give me the call. The internet manager's response was "maybe another hundred off" but a thousand was out of the question. So they must be awfully proud of them still, but I just don't see the market staying that way for long.

Curious to know which dealers you are talking to.

Well I wasn't so happy when I saw that my tags will be over $800.00 bucks.

:lookout:

There must be a lot of folks on here from Colorado.
