Hopeful article on gas prices

Here's an article on MSN Auto concerning price of gasoline. It's the most hopeful article I've read. Just thought I'd share....

That's a nice outlook, but there was another MSN article that someone else linked me at work (don't have the URL handy) which says it'll probably hit $200 a barrel.

With all the money spent on the war, alternative fuels could've been developed 2x's over and some.

thanks for the optimisum...but herd on the news of $10 a gallon soon, NO JOKE :bash:

The world would die. I guarantee the Govt would step in and subsidize that crap. There is a global food crisis going on right now and a big part of it is gas prices. This nation runs on trucks, and truckers can barely fill their tanks already. Gas will not get to 10 dollars a gallon. Our Gov't will not let it get that bad, and the world can't afford to let it get that bad.

Might want to look again. Some places HAVE BEEN paying $10 gallon. If oil hits 200 a barrel so will YOU.
And the gov ALREADY subsidizes our oil prices in a big way.

Where is it $10 a gallon?

I see it hanging around $5 a gallon pretty soon but with all the profit that oil companies are making we won't hit $10 anytime soon.

People were predicting $5 a gallon was supposed to hit 3 years ago and we still aren't there.....yet.

If you think the goverment is the awnser well good luck with that. They are doing everything they can to hold down gas prices. I figure 10/ gallon is in the near future. We did it to our selves just like the housing market and foreclousres. All of the problems americans complain about and want the goverment to fix were caused by americans. The biggest problem with america is the false sense that the goverment will always make it better. All I can say is you better start looking out for your self.

Look at Europe they are paying the equilivent to $20/gallon or market price on fuel. We are under a umbrella that holds gas prices lower then the market price.

When you consider that the US gov't seems intent on destroying the value of the dollar, $10/gal gas seems inevitable.

Also if you factor in tax subsidies the oil companies get, plus the cost of US military which helps protect the oil companies access to foreign crude, we're paying well over $10 now.

When I said subsidize, I think I meant price ceiling. And honestly, I think you guys are seriously underestimating the reaction of the world if gas hit 10 bucks a gallon. We're talking like 8 dollars for a gallon of milk, and 10 bucks for a loaf of bread. People in this country will starve, and people will NOT be able to afford to drive to work. There's already mass protests in countries like Egypt, and Haiti because people can't afford food. The last time gas shot up to 5 bucks a gallon I think was on 9/11. The Gov't stepped in stopped that bullshit quick, fast, and in a hurry. Although, the circumstances were certainly different. Perhaps you're right when you say its not smart on relying on the Govt, but the dollar is supposed to rising in value next year according to articles I've read. Honestly, poeple would revolt if gas hit 10 bucks a gallon. Not on the principle of they can't fill their 4runner, but they can't go to work. The effects on the economy would devestate the International Political Economy.

I would hate to think of a real war over oil, but the possibility does indeed exist that our military forces may be used to....Ahem!....annex oil fields in foreign lands. Sure, it is a remote chance - but desperate times call for desperate measures.
:bash:

Think about it for a minute. The Iraqis - as well as the Saudis and the Kuwaitis "owe us" for their mere existence. We have saved their sorry butts from each other's acts of war - such as Saddam's invasion back in 1990. (Some people think they might show a little more gratitude for our past assistance, right?)

If they really thought that the US or some of our adversaries were angry enough, they might step up to the plate. After all, wouldn't they rather 'make a deal' with us than becoming a province of China or Russia?

Of course, extremely high prices will make alternative fuels more lucrative and make domestic petroleum exploration seem feasible. We honestly do have enough of our own oil - such as the reserves in North Dakota, Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico - to be "energy independent" of OPEC, but it costs too much (right now) to harvest it. There is also the lack of refining capacity, as we have not constructed a new one since Carter was in office!
:(

Buckle up, since it is going to be rough ride!

New refineries are what we really need.

As far as the money spent on the war comments...I absolutely disagree. That money would not have been put toward developing alternative fuel energy. That will come from the free market, not the government.

The only possible way the government can subisidize gas prices is suspending the 18 cents in federal tax or impose a windfall tax on oil companies. Don't recall the two oil companies, but both had record profits amid high oil prices.

Besides, this administration's poor relationships with South American countries and 40% of the world's oil production coming from OPEC, let's face it, if you need anything derived from oil they have you by the b*lls. Unless the every country that's advance enough develops an alternative fuel to gas and oil, I wouldn't hold my breath to see gas prices fall.

I think folks in the UK have long been paying $5/gallon. The rest of the world laughed when Americans were complaining about $2.50/gallon gas prices, they were paying like $3/liter.

If the US had not backed up Saddam and supplied him with weapons in the 80's then he probably would not have invaded anyone in 1990.
I think the people and governments in the Middle East are well aware of US 'assistance' in the area and maybe don't appreciate it.

Yeah, it could be a really rough ride ahead, if the US, Russia and China go to war over oil.

You seem to think that history has anything to do with the future. You really need to get over that. This is a changed world and it's never going back to the way you (and all of us) want it too. Sad but true.

You are right. thought I'd read about it somewhere. But he chart ought to scare you nonethless. We've got it pretty cushy compared to most non oil producing countries.

edit: On further review that is almost a YEAR old!!! Bet you I did read of $10 gal somewhere. Germany is over $8 now and less than 7 on that chart.

Aside from the turmoil in the middle east, the fundamental change that has occurred is that there is now demand for MORE than 100% of the oil being produced. China, India, etc are demanding more and more of the oil available. until this time the US got as much as we wanted and the rest of the world could get by on what was left. Now they are using some of what we used to assume was our right to oil.
And that ain't gonna change.
Only going to get worse.

Seriously.

It's already $5/gallon at a few gas stations here in California. San Francisco was in the $4.50 range weeks ago.

I'm trying to figure out a way to get invested in the oil companies. At the rate they are making money, there has got to be some angle there.

On a side note. About 5 years ago, I met a dude in the oil industry. He was from Texas and owned his own business dealing with oil. Sort of a 'middle' man of sorts. He made a few million bucks a year and told me, over the next 10 years your going to see oil prices skyrocket and there will be no better earning business in the world. I wish I would have paid more attention to him.

:bash:

It basically boils down to over consummation of the planets resources. There's so many people on this planet that our species has become a virus! Our economic problems are only going to get worse but those of us who are prepared can use it to our advantage. There are winners and losers and line for survival becomes clear the closer we get towards revolutionary change. If you can start planning for the end of days now everything will be a lot less stressful when it eventually comes 12/21/ 2012. I've got my acoustic guitar, a bottle of whiskey and my row boat to take out into the middle of the lake and just watch it all crumble down.
