Hopefully easy fixes...new purchase

Just bought 4th gen from a member. The issues were known at the time, but it wasn't a deal breaker. I just hope I can resolve them quickly.

1. Backup camera doesn't work. It's built in to mirror. Don't know if they're all like that or not. When put in reverse, it glitches but never turns on fully. Don't know if it's wiring related or just malfunction with mirror or camera.

2. Sunroof has been unplugged. Was told when they bought it, it had an issue with opening/closing. So first I need to know where the plug is and I also need to know what issues are known with sunroof.

I went out and tried to diagnose these issues myself since no one has responded...maybe with these findings I can get more help...


1. Back up camera issue. I pulled down the dome light/sunglasses holder piece. Inside was a bunch of wires which said reverse camera/inside camera/etc. only 2 plugs were plugged in. Approx 3-4 were not. I'm assuming this is my issue. However, I can't find the ends that are supposed to plug in. Can anyone send me a pic of what wires are supposed to go where?

2. Moonroof issue. While pulling down trim piece as mentioned above, I found the plug that was disconnected. And by messing with the moonroof, I understand what the old owner was trying to explain. The moonroof does not automatically stop when it's closed. It will go straight into the tilt mode. So basically you have to guess when it's closed. Any idea on what could cause this? Not a big deal but the girl may not be able to figure it out.

I remember reading some where there's a way to reset sun roof by opening closing or something like that? Or maybe switch is bad

[MENTION=99304]Deputy[/MENTION], not sure about your back up camera, BUT, as far as the moon roof goes: Whenever the battery gets disconnected, the 4Runner ECM resets itself, which will result in EVERYTHING recalibrating (fuel injection, RPMs, rear window, and yes, even the moon roof). All that you have to do is a single, COMPLETE cycle of the moon roof close to open to tilt and back to closed. This should reset the automatic open and close settings. I had trouble figuring this out as well, many years ago. Goofy, but it is what it is. Still, it never prompted me to want to disconnect it. That's just weird.

Congrats on the new ride. You didn't provide much info in your first post which is probably why no one responded. With electrical and wiring issues it can be a bunch of different things and we're just on a computer, not looking at the truck with you!

So - pictures pictures pictures! Take some and post up so we can tell what plugs you're talking about. The more details and information you provide, the more we can help out.

As for the moonroof - there are lots of documented issues like it getting stuck open or close. Check to see if it's the issue of just 'resetting it' like folks have mentioned above. If it isn't then I haven't heard of an issue like yours before but maybe someone else can chime in. To inspect the actual motor and rear portion of the moonroof you'll have to pull the headliner. It's pretty easy but get another person to help when it comes to the actual removal. If you aren't comfortable doing all that, take it to a professional.

I can't speak to the back-up camera since I don't have one of those, but I have noticed that closing my sunroof has become a bit of a guessing game, too. I used to just be able to hold the button for a second and release it and the sunroof would either open or close completely. Now it seems I need to hold the button and watch it closely to catch it in between the slide and tilt modes.

I know it's got something to do with disconnecting my battery or something, so I'll be interested to see the fix. Same thing happens with the auto-up/down driver's window and the rear window; they all need to be re-taught or something any time the power is temporarily cut.

Thanks guys. I will go and take a picture of wiring for the rear camera. I will also try the 'reset' for the moonroof. I did search but mainly just found water leak issues. I've been on forums forever so I know to search. But also when you are on bigger forums, threads seem to get lost or just overlooked with hundreds of threads with it.

EDIT - Moonroof appears to be fixed. It's now opening by itself and closing. I had to reset it twice. Hope it stays.

I thought I fixed the moonroof. It was cycling properly for several cycles. The last time it was opening it popped a few times when it got to the end. Now it will only open on the passenger side and it won't close. I hope a cable isn't broke. It was working fine. Ughhh

I've read up on them....had to clean out garage to park it for the meantime. There's a local shop who does this kind of work. Going to get an estimate and see what they say.

my 2005's moonroof is still going strong, after a nasty sticking/stopping and panic on my part late last year

I will enjoy it no matter what. I have a 3rd gen also. Now I just need someone to chime in to help with reverse camera. Maybe someone can take a pic of their wiring...my rear DVD player isn't working either. Maybe some wires are missing.

I got everything figured out.

1) sunroof. Took it to a local car shop who's been in business a while. They found out that nothing was broke. However, the slide on the driver side came out of sync with the passenger side where the wind reflector goes down. That resulted in the sunroof to come off track. They put it back in and greased it up. Works like new now.

2) since the liner was removed to fix sunroof, I had the perfect time to go look at all the wires for the rear camera and DVD system. Apparently both were aftermarket systems so the wiring was all over the place. I think they had an aftermarket stereo to help run everything. However, wires were missing, cut, and unplugged. I ended up taking all extra wires out.

3) Since I removed DVD system, there was a large hold cut into the liner. I took the opportunity to get the liner recovered. They are going to fix the hole and cover it completely.

4) while it's in there, they're tinting the windows.
