hello every one. i was wondering if you guys can help me a bit as i am planing to get a 4th gen 4runner in the near future, but did i do have some questions. what should i be looking for when looking at the 4th genes, rust issues maybe?
is v8 better then v6? thwould the lexus model do well? also how many miles is too many miles(if that exist for Toyota lol). i live in California (near sf) and have seen a lot of 4 runners that run at least 200k. Main goal of the 4runner is to do some hunting and off road from time to time. any and all information is helpful. thanks guys :thanks::thanks::thanks:

I’ve heard that the v6 models had head gaskets issues ...I’m sure 4th gen buys here can help better than a 3rd gen one lol

V6 vs V8 comes down to personal preference and needs, both are rock solid engines. The 03-05 v6 had some reported head gasket issues and I believe there are some cracked manifold issues with the V8. Also timing chain Vs timing belt. Mileage means very little for these trucks, what's important is maintenance/care. If you can find one with a good maintenance history you can look past high miles. Rust shouldn't come up much for a California 4runner.

As a fellow Californian, good luck and be patient. After purchasing two used 4th gens, I will tell you it comes down to persistence and being ready to pounce when you find a good deal. It's a competitive market out there for used 4runners.

It's important to figure out what you will use T4R for. V6 can get the job done if you do basic towing every once in a while but it's always nice to have a v8 for towing if you do it often. v8 can be rough on gas but that's what you give up in exchange of benefits that comes with having a v8.

it's strongly recommended you look into 4WD 4Runners, even if you live in an area where you might find yourself never needing 4WD. It's always nice to have 4WD on standby. I once had a '04 SR5 RWD with v8 and it was a sweet ride but I pinched myself real hard every time inclement weather occurred. I struggled to get out of my own driveway in a 4Runner with 3-4" inches of snowfall.

Do you have a family or plan to travel a lot with companion(s) including furry ones? There is an option for 3rd row seating that can be rendered inactive by hooking it to the bars on ceiling or take it out of the 4Runner altogether and store it in your garage until you need it in case you need to make use of space in cargo

Going from a SR5 to a Sport Edition 2x where I now drive a '07 V6 Sport, I absolutely love this model. It's all about the options that comes with the model.

Assuming you're savvy with the internet, look up comparisons between SR5, Sport, Limited & Urban Runner (rare to find with low mileage but if you can find this model then strongly consider it pending rust/maintenance history!)

edit: Lexus SUVs would do just fine if you can find the right one. I'd think you're paying for the brand because it's more expensive. Toyota and Lexus are part of the same company so either brand will last you a lot longer than other major brands...but then I'm biased ;) I've never owned anything but Toyota 4Runners so I can't attest to the quality of other major brands in regard to driving / maintenance

Thank you lol. Great information. And good start. 4wd was always gonna be a part of the car for me. And toeing is hardly going to happen lol. The 4 runner is mainly going to be a weekend car and want to start hunting this year as well.
