Horn randomly(?) blares

Driving my 2005 4Runner today, the horn suddenly began sounding--4 or 5 honks in rapid succession, then quiet for a bit. Then it would repeat. It did it several times. Sometimes it seemed precipitated by my pressing the brake, but I'm not sure of that.
Is it an alarm of some sort, or a malfunction?
We've been awakened before by a similar honking in the middle of the night while it's parked.
Any thoughts?

But seriously sorry as this sounds like a wiring issue/shortage.
