Horrible crash test ratings! Can I add an airbag?

I was looking up crash test ratings for my 94' and I found some pretty scary results. The passenger ratings aren't too bad but driver's side crash test ratings are horrible, only one star. I'm very concerned about this because I make trips to tahoe in the winter. So I was wondering if it would be possible to buy a steering wheel with an airbag from a junkyard or something and install it with no problems? I also have cruise control if that complicates anything.

they do sell aftermarket steeringwheels with airbags, but i'm afraid that is not the only thing you would need. You would also need the sensor that detects crashes to tell the airbag when to deploy for the system to be useful. older crash-detectors may be primitive enough to make work, but i think that is uncharted territory.

Any older vehicle is going to have pretty poor crash ratings at this point.

Your best bet is to drive the speed limit, don't drink and drive, and obey all traffic laws.

not realy worth it.. you may aswell buy a newer truck with one as it will cost about the same as installing one in an old truck

Save your money and effort put in an interior cage with mounting bar for 3 or 5 point harnesses. Personally if you have never tasted your steering wheel it means you wear your seat belt and will be fine. Unless your rolling on firestone tires made in the early 90's.....

The only thing about those harnesses is that I heard if you get pulled over they don't count as a seatbelt and you can still get a ticket if the cop is a dooche because they're not DOT approved or DOT installed or something.

yeah thats about right..

here in AUS we ALL have to wear our seat belts.. (seems just fu*king dumb not to anyway)

and you guys in the US have much stronger airbag cause lots o people over there seem to think they are just as good as a seat belt so you get a broken nose from the airbag if it fires and we get nothing but a dent in the car
