How bad is the RUST?

Snapped a few pics of belly of the truck, how bad does the rust look? 2000 4Runner with 160K miles, timing belt was replaced at ~100K in year 2010.

I was gonna say 'ok' till i saw the last pic of the tranny mount area - that's too much rust damage for me. I'd keep looking & Luck! :cowboy:
 
I ran into this issue a lot around the Seattle area at shady non-branded dealerships. They buy East Coast cars at auction dirt cheap that have been in a ton of salt or literally partially submerged (dont count on seeing this on the carfax either and they'll certainly deny it) and clean them up pretty on the outside.

Wait on a nicer one, took me two months searching WA/OR till i found what i wanted.

yeah I'd pass, too much rust... and you're learning on what to look for!!! yay! you'll find one, just be patient, and diligent.
 
Folks - To me, this looks more like surface rust than anything else but some probing with a screwdriver should tell the tale quickly. I have a 2000 @235,000 miles - original owner. I have lived in the rust belt the whole time and did some welding on the frame 4 years ago due to rust on the right hand side (passenger) between the muffler and the inside frame rail. Also welded the inside of the rear control arm bracket on that side - another spot to check. My T4R is strong, running good and the frame looks a whole lot worse than this one. Be aware that those the live in non-salt areas have a whole different perspective on what kind of rust is acceptable.

Good point. No rust on cars where I live.
 
They're not showing the areas that matter. A cross-member isn't going to rust out, but the frame will. You need to look around the rear LCA's frame mounts. Also look from the mounts up the frame towards the forward most cross-member. In my opinion it isn't that bad. My frame is currently in worse shape then that, and I'm not worried about it. Take some time cleaning it up, and repair the frame where needed.

What really concerns me about this is the fact that there isn't any undercoating on it. These come from the factory with an under-coating, and it's not easy to remove.
 
I do admit, I don't like any rust, even a little... my 97 has too much rust for my taste, and it has less than pictured... so maybe I'm picky but it's my opinion...

I did say I pass, and I stand by it... it's my opinion...

is it a good deal??? in a 5-6k $ range, I think it's acceptable, I think...

should you pass it up??? depends on price range being cleaner will be harder to find...

something to think about... cause it happened to me... I bought mine from cali for higher price, 3 months later... same truck/spec's showed up locally for 3k less... and a blue 01 ltd with SC showed up locally with less miles for 2k less than mine... both were/are more than what this owner is asking...

It's over that range, close to $7K so I will pass, for that price I have another couple I'm considering that's in much better shape, interior and belly. Thanks again!

I live in the salt belt & I'm an original owner too. My frame looks nothing like that. Solid as a rock with surface rust. See the rust on the bottom of the body? Mine has none of that.

Hard to tell from photo's but really looks like surface rust to me...poke it to make sure that the frame is not compromised. I don't think that rusty surface is the body, it's the bottom of the trailer hitch....

I really like my T4R and will drive it until it drops. It's a 15 year old truck....the body look good and I take care of it mechanically BUT the most likely cause of death of most of these will be frame rust. Like me, it won't live forever.

I've definitely seen way worse but if possible hold out for better. I do suggest investing in easy outs and a tap and dye set. Broken bolts are common place on damn near every job I do. Just a matter of seized components.
 
This is surface rust? That's rot.
