Hi gang...took my new runner into the dealership for the first oil change and as per the manual for this, had them check the brakes and rotate the tires. $116. bucks (including tax)! They said they adjusted the brakes when they checked them. Well, it says to do the above every 5000 miles in the manual, so I thought why not, but I wanted to know how much most of you pay for this service, and if you guys do the recommended procedures or just the oil change part. Thanks!

yea you got rip off big time! cost me $37 + tax to have the 5k done. also what did they adjust on the brake? I did not know that it could be adjust?? except when you're installing new pads they sometime adjust the ebrake. but at 5k miles?? hummmm

I change my oil. When I get under the car, I inspect it and notice any problems. Having said all that, I personally don't know anyone that changes their own oil, other than me of course. You have to have ramps, tools, work with hot oil, dispose of it properly. You also have to change it in the hot summers & cold winters. I think changing your own oil is becoming a dying art.<<<< said:

I have only 4k on mine so far. The first change will be at the dealer but after that, I do it myself. I hope that I will not even have to worry about ramps. When I had my Blazer, the ground clearance was enough to change the oil. I don't see why the 4runner would not be the same.

I never use ramps and can't remember the last vehicle I needed extra space underneath to change the oil. When I did though I would just stick the jack under the body somewhere and just jack the body up enough to get some space. No need for any of this for the 4Runner though, plenty of room.

My dealers quick lube is $29.00 and includes a 29 pt. inspection (covers everything on the warranty check list plus some) also includes lube and topping off all fluids. They charge $17.00 for tire rotation. The way the brakes are adjusted is by backing up and applying the brakes. That's why they are called self adjusting brakes (that charge would piss me off). I would call up the service manager and ask some questions. If you don't get the right answers tell him you will be calling Toyota and complaining. That should get the results you need.
In the future you would be better off to look at the warranty recommended items to be "done" versus "checked" and ask what they cost. The checked items should be covered on a quick lube check list that comes with your oil/filter change so you have it for your records. Good luck in the future.

I have changed the oil without ramps on my 3rd generation 4Runner. I actually find it best to put it up on ramps, it does make it a bit of a strecth though to reach the filter. Bottom line: changing the oil in the 4Runner has always been a pain in the ass, with or without ramps.toybox said:

Went to the dealer today to get touch up paint (see my post I added today about body side moldings). Anyway, I asked for the service manager and asked how much it should cost for the 5,000 mile, and 10,000 mile oil change which according the manual includes a tire rotation and visual inspection of the brakes, and he looked me in the eye and told me $115. Guess I gotta call another dealer to check their price, and then if $115. is out of the ball park, contact Toyota.
I used to change my own oil on all my cars. Haven't done that in several years. Mostly I don't like having to deal with the dirty oil (draining, splattering, cleaning off where it drips, storing, disposing of, etc.). That, plus you can get an oil change for so little these days (sorry rhlitt, you got taken). If you can find an honorable mechanic or service dept., it's worth it to me.
