How best to deal with underbody rust? 2001 Runner

I just purchased a 2001 4Runner and it has a fair amount of rust throughout the underbody.

I want to stop the rust and protect against future corrosion so I've bought some Rust-Oleum products off the shelf of Home Depot and am wondering if this is the right way to go or if I should try something else?

My plan has so far been to scrub off the loose particles, use the "Rust Reformer" then the Flat "Protective Enamel". Areas that are hard to spray or too small will get the Protective Enamel applied by brush.

Are the better ideas than this one? There's rust throughout some of the engine components as well but I can't reach everything so thought I could just hit the obvious parts I can reach.

My roads are salted all winter and I just make sure to spray the undercarriage thoroughly. Haven't had major issues yet. But it is dry here, though.

I've heard people using POR15 or just used motor oil to coat the bottom.

im not sure about your rust, but when i wheel in mud i spray WD40 under my car so the mud wont stick. it doesnt stay on that long but works.. im not sure if you have salt for snow on your roads.. but might be same concept. you should look into that. i wouldnt try it unless your sure it works. good luck!

While that rust is really minimal, the plan you have is just fine. Anything to keep salt, water, and air from reaching metal should help protect it.

I know I'm new here, but I know others that have used Eastwoods rust encapsulator. I don't know how it fares against the Rustoleum products, but those I know that have used it swear by it.

O and BTW, they sell rust-oleum undercoating ppray at wal-mart and has rubber in it.
