How can i stop this rust from further developing?

I have had this one spot of rust on my rear bumper where it was lightly hit by another vehicle. It dented it and slightly cracked the chrome in a few places, so now anytime it rains i end up with lines of rust flowing down the bumper because the rain gets into where the cracks are. What can i do to stop this?

This is the only flaw in both my bumpers, otherwise they are flawless.

Well if the chrome plateing has cracked then there is no way to prevent the rust from forming other than to sand it down and put some paint on it. Or if it starts getting bad then you can get replacement bumper ends with fresh chrome plating for about half the price the OEM ones are.

My front is starting to do the same, next week I plan on removing it. sanding the hell out of the inside and out. Im going to coat both sides with some master series silver (rust preventive paint ) . And then Im going to spray bomb it.

Dirtbike is spot on with everything he's said already, if its chrome then thats what it is, there's nothing to do about it unless you plan on sanding and painting the entire thing. By the time you do that however you could probably buy a new one for less.

I'd have to agree with THEREALTOR1, you could buy a bumper for almost less than what you pay to get it fixed!

I bought a brand new aftermarket piece from an Autobody Supply store for $136.00 + taxes (Canadian....shipping is a killer here). With help from this forum, I did the removal of the old bumper, and installed the new one myself, plus did some extra work on my Valance to change things up.

I guarantee if you get a good price on a good quality bumper, and do it yourself, you'll be happy with the results!

You could try using some plain old steel wool to remove the rust and polish up the bumper and then some type of acid to neutralize the rust. You might get lucky and have old a few specks of pitting under the rust. A little clear coat might stop it from coming back as quickly.

My rear center section of bumper rusted through and the ends were both about to rust through the chrome. I ordered a new center section online and paid about $120 for it with free shipping. I took off all three sections and sanded/steel wooled the underside thoroughly and then put two coats of brush-on Herculiner. Pretty easy fix, just be sure to get about 25 new bolts and a few cap nuts. The bolts that don't break will be in pretty bad shape. At least they will be if your ride gets a 5 month salt bath every year.

get some metal duct tape. Fixed my rear bumper rust holes pretty good and sanded it and painted it, you can hardly tell there were rust holes or tape. It might not be a permanent fix but at least you don't see big ugly rust holes taunting you because you don't have enough money for an offroad bumper...

Never knew that stuff existed, sounds cool! I may just weld in a small piece of sheetmetal before school and paint over that, that should last a while. Hopefully. Thanks for the idea, though. I wrote that down to my list of things to buy, there goes some more money lol

yea that metal duct tape works really good and its really sticky. If you smooth it out real good and sand the seems its barely noticeable if you paint it. Its only good for small holes thou, my buddy tried to fix his rocker panels with expanding foam and that tape. it worked for a little bit until it started getting funky

You can get a new piece off ebay for $45. Less for primered ones I believe. And it won't look like a ghetto fix.

I would peel off that plastidip and properly paint the pieces. I'd imagine the plastidip would hold in moisture.

i actually have both side chrome bumper ends for sale if you want them, they are pretty much new. i just dont know how chipping is gonna be and how much to ship them.

I appreciate the offer, but I think I'll just save up for diamondplate, my Lt. can probably do them for a lower price than ARB, and I think I'll be Rhinolining that bumper inside and out if I get it.
