How can I tell if I have a VIP security system in my '98 SR5?

How can I tell if I have a VIP Security System in my 1998 4Runner SR5?

I read somewhere that if I have a rectangular "Toyota Security" thing in the dash that I have the VIP security - does this count? (see red square by the e-brake - yes, this is my 4Runner - this is by the ebrake between the front seats)

Also, I am torn between making my exisiting Valet remote start key fob do lock/unlock or shop for an OEM fob that will also let me roll down the back window... I'm having problems finding one for a 1998...

ALSO: I do NOT have any kind of box under the driver's seat...

This listing on eBay says it is for '99 and newer, yet says it is compatible with my '98 SR5 depending on the FCC ID... How can I find out of they match or not? Will this remote work?

my only complaint is they only work from 2-5 feet away. after buying i did a little bit of research and all of the aftermarket ones seem to be poor in this area. it looks like you have the vip alarm, however look under the driver seat for the brain, that will be the real sign.

Thanks for the reply and your impressions! I've looked under the seat... No brain for me. Looks like it might have been taken out at one point. Oh well.

Does that mean I can't use one of these OEM key fobs, unless I have the brain?

I have a 99' that did not come with a fob. Inside the original owners manual that came with the truck it the VIP security manual and all the programming info. I called my local dealer and they had me locate the "brain" under my seat (could be tucked up under the dash as well according to toyota). I have the brain and I can either purchase a fob from toyota or go OEM.

According to toyota, no brain=no way to program fob or oem fob. You can always buy a complete aftermarket system though. I looked around and found an 6 button for $150.00, brain and two fobs.

The black box under the drivers seat is the RKE Module (remote keyless entry). Without one, you can't use factory transmitters.
