How critical is the skid plate?

How critical is the skid plate if I never go off roading? I'd like to remove it so that I can get to the oil filter with ease

I don't think that there is any structural advantage by having it installed, however it does offer significant piece of mind in case you run over something in the road, it will protect more sensitive areas.
