How difficult? Drop tranny pan & replace solenoid?

To make a long story short, an error code (P2716) is pointing to an intermittant problem with a pressure control solenoid. I found a resource to buy the solenoid and I'm wondering just how difficult this will be to do by myself. Evidently, I'll need to drop the transmission pan and I'm going to replace the filter while I'm in there. I'm confident that I can get to the solenoid, but it's quite expensive of an undertaking if I can't replace/repair it.

Can anyone provide any advice? My sincere appreciation and thank you, in advance.

While I haven't dropped the pan on the 4th Gen 4Runners. I have done the same thing on other vehicles. It wasn't very difficult, just time consuming. Lots of little bolts.

Make sure you have another gasket or RTV sealant to use when you put the pan back on.

If I can ask, how many miles are on your truck? I'm considering the same thing since I just bought my truck and want to swap the tranny fluid anyways.

Thanks, Thumper. I have just turned 93k on the odo. My fluid color is still bright, and I'm using a new drain pan, so I'm considering putting the "old" fluid right back in, instead of spending the ~$30/quart for Totota's monopoly fluid. Any recommendations of other brands/manufacturers on the fluid that might be usable, in addition to Toyota, where I might save some pennies?

I'm told REDLINE synthetic ATF meets and/ or exceeds the Toyota fluid requirements. Do a search on here to be 100% With those miles I personally would never reuse the old fluid.

To go through all that trouble to work on the tranny and just reuse that fluid is crazy. Go with the Redline ATF.

Agreed, I was getting a little thrifty, thoughtless...thanks.

Still looking for any feedback on the solenoid, though. Any tips, at all, would bolster my confidence in dropping that pan and actually getting something substantial done. Regardless, I'll try to take some pics and post for any future reference.
