How Dirty is my filter?

I am going over the little things that need cleaning on my 98' and it has a K&N FIPK that appears to be rather dirty, to me anyway. As far as I know it has 50k on it, and not sure if it has been cleaned or not. I would just buy the cleaner and use it but I have heard a few horror stories of it clogging the MAF and causing issues. Any advice would be great!

K&N recommends a filter cleaning interval of 50k miles and your filter looks fine. The basis for the 50k miles is that K&N claims the more dirt that the filter collects, the better it filters. You should buy the recharge kit and follow the directions for cleaning and oiling the filter. The most common issue seems to be over oiling. Since I've had mine I've gotten a code for a bad MAF sensor once. I cleaned the sensor and made sure I didn't over oil my filter and haven't had a problem since.

I appreciate the reply, I hope to get to this soon, mainly need to change my diff and transfer case fluid asap, just never seem to have the time.

Thanks,
