How do I know if a 4Runner has a part-time or full-time 4WD?

I am in the market for a 2007 SR5 4WD V6, and I need one that only has the RWD at all times, and where I only activate the 4WD when I need it. I searched on the Internet, and saw images of 4WDs cabins, and didn't see a separate lever to activate 4WD. Does it mean all of these models have full-time 4WD?

What is that option called?


Also, what is teh difference between the Sport model and the SR5, other than the hood?

V6's are selectable between 4wd and 2wd. V8 4wd's are all time.

4th gens dont have levers for selection. Its simply a button selector to the right of the steering wheel, down about a few inches.

Sports have slighly larger brakes, nicer wheels, different seats, 10 speaker JBL sound system, hood scoop, XREAS linked suspension/shocks. Others will chime in with more info im sure.

All of the Gen4 V6 4WD 4Runners have a selectable transfer case... 2H, 4H, and 4L. There is a rotary switch to the right of the steering wheel. Most V8's are full-time 4WD and can be switched into low-range.

The Sport Edition has the XREAS suspension (hydraulically cross-linked), bigger brakes, different interior trim, and the non-functional hood scoop... I think that's it.

I've had nine AWD vehicles, I like how they drive in rain and snow and other slippery situations, like how the tires wear evenly, like how drivetrain forces are spread out among the components. I've seen plenty of owners shell out big money to get a RWD option on AWD vehicles, none have gotten any improvement in ride or mileage or wear. What is your need of RWD for?

Well to be honest, I really dont know if it comes standard, I know mine has it but that doesn't mean its standard. Sorry for the confusion.

This. Also, it's nice not having it (my SE doesn't), because it costs a lot more (or takes you more time) when doing a new headunit when you disconnect the amp.

I'm not one to question you most of the time but, The SEs came with 13.3 inch front brakes. SR5s and Limiteds came with 12.6 inch rotors. Except for the rare vehicle that got lucky and came off the line with the larger brakes. All SEs have X-Reas, and the JBL was an option on SEs not a standard feature.

Except for the rare vehicle that got lucky and came off the line with the larger brakes. All SEs have X-Reas, and the JBL was an option on SEs not a standard feature.

I must have been one of the lucky ones, my Limited had the bigger brakes. The funny part, even with the bigger brakes I could only get a little over 20K miles out of the front pads.

Do yourself a favor and upgrade your headunit. My non-JBL SE stereo was balls too, but after just putting in a new deck (albeit, I did buy a nice one; anything is better than the factory junk), it sounds a million times better.

No, this is incorrect. The Sport does NOT come standard with JBL. It's an option.
