How do i know what size my differential i have?

its a 98 Limited 2wd. the differential is grinding. it gets louder as you step on the gas.

I need to change it right away because i have to take it on a long drive.

Also any other differentials that are interchange able?

thanks for the reply. the reason why i'm asking is because i called around a few junk yards and they were asking me if it was 3.6, or 3.9, or 4.1 (similar numbers) so which one of these is the one i have?

I just need to put a used one in there because i'm only planning on keeping this for about a year. dont want to do any upgrades or spend any extra money than i have to.

Thats the gear ratio. You probably have 4.1 as that is the most common. You don't really have to worry about which one you get as you have a 2wd and don't need the front and rear diff to match. I would just get the 4.1 diff if it were me

There is no factory 4.35. Toyota made a 4.30 ratio though. And yes that or 4.10 will work. I would stay away from 3.90s though (you'll have less power).

True, unless he goes to bigger than stock tires in the future. Then it will lag more and use more gas. If the OP sticks with stock tires, then 3.90s or 4.10s would be the best. If you go to 265/75/16s, then 4.10s or 4.30s would be the best. 4.10 is a good all around ratio because it works well with stock 265/70/16s (31s) or 265/75/16s (32s). If you ever plan on lifting it and going to 33s, now's the time to get 4.88s (aftermarket). And like steezemqueen said, if you ever wanted a locker (or posi), do it now.
