How do I loosen the throttle cable?

Hi. First post here.

My 4runner is idling too high. I looked into a solution for the problem and I took the throttle body off of my 2000 V6 4runner to try to clean it. It seemed just fine. When I put everything back together it now revs even higher at idle! I think that when I put it back together I made the throttle cable too tight because now it's constantly sitting at 2000 rpm + once I let off the gas. I am not too sure how to loosen it. Can anyone show me?

Because I am an idiot, here is a picture. If anyone could please circle in MS paint or something the area that is used to adjust it, that would be great.

Just out of frame of the picture is the cable adjustment. The cable on top is for cruise control and the one on bottom is the throttle cable. You will see 2 nuts which are jammed together. That's where you adjust.

But I highly doubt that's the issue of your high idle.

But I highly doubt that's the issue of your high idle.

You're right. Something else is up. Adjusted the cable and nothing changed. Any ideas? When I tap the gas it now REALLY takes off.

Check vacuum hoses. When you have high idle, means its getting too much air.

Uh, did no one notice that he's missing a cable here? There is a second cable coming from the accelerator, you need to hook that back up (it goes on top). Hopefully you just took it of when you took that picture. I dont' remember which is the throttle and which is the return cable, but maybe you have disconnected the return cable... Actually I'm pretty sure that its the return cable you are missing. Hook that thing back up.

3 cables connect to the throttle. coming from the left is the cruise control, coming from the right and going into the bottom is the throttle cable, and coming in from the left to the top is the return cable. You only have 2 connected.

I guess I knew that. The 5 speed only has 2 cables at the throttle body, that's why I didn't even think to look for the third.

The third cable is the transmission kick down cable, it wouldn't affect idle though. The OP's engine is a 5-speed manual transmission though because he has a dashpot, there's only two cables for him (cruise control on the left and throttle on the right).

One other thing to check: Make sure the throttle valve is opening and closing freely inside. On the older 4Runners (2nd Gen) sometimes they would stick after cleaning and you had to put a little oil in the valve to grease it a bit. Just a drop on the inside on both ends of the shaft worked fine for mine.

The cable itself might be the issue if it's sticking. You can check with the engine off, press the gas pedal and release at various speeds and see if it snaps shut immediately or not. If not, the cable is gunked up.

You can remove the entire cable and housing if you detach it from the back of the pedal, the fire wall in the engine bay and at the throttle body. Then blast carb cleaner down the housing and let it dry. Then lube as best you can with chain lube or white lithium grease and it'll be happy again. Once again, worked wonders on my 5-speed I had before.

Hey guys, sorry to change the subject somewhat, I've been searching the forums for the better part of the past two days and can't seem to find my issue.

I took the TB and IAC off and cleaned both of them on my gf's 97 4runner, replaced the gaskets and put them back on. Now the throttle cable has absolutely no slack to where if I attach it to the TB it pins it about 3/4 of the way open. That's only half of the problem though and I plan on taking the cable out and cleaning and lubing it. But first, I need to figure out why when the throttle cable is engaged, it does not open the butterfly. It does not engage any other part of the assembly, it just moves independently of everything else. If I pull on the cable that goes to the transmission or cruise control the whole assembly moves and the butterfly opens. The spring I circled feels kind of squishy. I'm not sure how I went from having no issues with the cable or throttle body mechanically working to this but
