How do i remove the factory roof rack from a 1996 4runner?

Hi fellows

I just picked up a 1996 4runner and i want to remove the factory roof rack. I cant seem to figure it out. I loosen up the knob screw-like thing, but i cant get the rail to come off. Do they slide out or something? Does anyone have a picture of how to remove this?

Any help would be appreciated.

you want to remove the cross bars or the rails? the cross bars just loosen up and come off and then there are some strange looking screws under where they originally were. the bit used looks kind of like a star... like this *

they are pretty much impossible to loosen... good luck

i m trying to remove the 'rails' i guess, the ones that are on the left and right sides of the car, NOT the 3 bars in between...

so i will need to loosen the * screws to do this or?

yeah I think... i dont know why you would want to take those off though?

on the front of the rails there is a little end cap... if you loosen the bigger cross bars and move them back, you can remove the end caps...then you can see one of the * screws

if you do remove the rails, you'll have to get the plastic piece the go on in place of the rail, to cover up the holes. not sure how many torx screws/holes there are per side.

Yeah I think it's a # 25 star that is needed if I remember right. I added a factory roof rack. The star bolts came right out on mine.
