How do I switch A/C off?

There are certain instances when the 4runner automatically turns on the A/C and does not allow you to turn it off.

The weather is warming up a bit here to have cool air blowing through the vents but it's not so warm for A/C type cold air.

Is there a sequence of button holds and pushes I can execute to enable swithching A/C off or is this a "take it to the dealer" type thing?

I've noticed if you put the left button which controls where it comes from to an in between setting it stops air from blowing all together. That is the solution I have found

This is the part I'm aware of. What I'm not aware of is how to make it so you can switch it off.

I have a Honda that did the same thing but there is a sequence of button holds and pushes than enables you to switch it off manually.

Turn the Temperature knob slightly clockwise and then push A/C button.
A/C is always ON if the temp knob is the set to the coldest temp.

Now, what about when you have defrost or defrost mix on with warm temps?
Back it off counter-clockwise one click and switch off as well?

You are not talking about the vent feature are you?

As long as your temperature knob isn't on "MAX A/C," you can switch the A/C on and off.

Huh? As [MENTION=157444]engeeoh01[/MENTION] said, The A/C only comes on automatically when you turn the temp knob full lock to cool. Once you back it off ANY number of notches (like all the way to heat) you can shut off the A/C as desired.

It doesn't matter what the vent setting is on...

Turn the cabin recirculation button on and the fan off, then the air will stop coming out the vents

AC comes on automatically when you have the vent knob set to one of the two positions that defrost the windshield. Defrosting is most efficient when you dehumidify the air, which is what the AC does, as well as cooling the air. So Toyota does this for you, whether you want it or not. You cannot manually turn off the AC in these two positions. And cabin air recirculation is disabled, so you get outside air. You cannot override this feature and select recirculate. This nanny feature is kind of irritating. My 3rd gen did not work this way. It was completely manual.

Also, as previously stated, the AC will automatically come on when you set the temperature knob to the max cool setting.

During the winter here in Colorado I pull the fuse for the A/C under the hood. Don't know which one it is off hand.
But I don't need the A/C running when its 0 degrees out.
Given we have a pretty dry climate here I don't have any issues defogging.

Thanks, this is what i was getting at but i was hoping there was a hack to switch the AC off manually once it switched on automatically. Obviously, I didn't do a very good job asking my question based on some responses.

A hack? You don't need no stinking hack, you just need to learn how it works.

If you have the temp knob full CCW, past a slight detent at the last position, you are in MAX AC. Period. "One ping only" CW, and you are in control.
