How do you exit the rear hatch after or during an accident??

Two needs this past week here:

1. One fellow drowned after lunching his boat and hit rev vs forward to exit the lake.

2. A SUV flipped on it’s side and the two passenger exited the rear hatch unharmed (very quick but not a 4Runner).

I looked for a release in my 07 T4R and in the manual and saw no handle or info. jow

2 sporadic incidents, and not to diminish the value; but there are always incidents like this where people try to say "shoulda".

I don't know of many rear hatch vehicles that have an exit handle in the rear. I think this is probably for safety. Animals or groceries or something pushing on it.

If you HAVE to get out of a rear window, I guarantee that using both legs and PUSHING will rip that rear slide able window out.

I think you have two isolated incidents and should not try to make them bigger than they really are. I was in a 2nd gen runner, a guy fell asleep; slammed into me and flipped me. I was shell shocked and crawled to safety through one of the side doors.

I just want to note, that in the drowning instance, the rear hatch would be the WORST way possible. Due to water pressure, it is virtually Impossible to open a door until there is pressure equalization. The back hatch represents a much larger door, meaning there would be more pressure exerted on it.

Also. Why would someone in that situation waste time by trying to climb to the back? If you really are worried that you might end up in a lake, put a window cracker under your seat. Those things will pop any window (drivers side preferably) and allow you to swim out.

Climbing to the back doesn't seem ideal to me either. However, I do recall seeing someone here wiring in a release in the cabin. There's a write-up somewhere, if you're interested you should be able to find it in a search.

I’m not trying to make an issue vs learning more about the 07 T4R. I thought I was missing something of the many options and how they work. Thanks! jow
