How do you replace the rear axle breather?

Any tips for how to replace the rear axle breather? Mine keeps getting clogged and oil comes out my rear axle seals. What's the OEM part number for a new breather and any tips installing it?

It's really easy to replace, just need an adjustable wrench and it screws right out.

I just replaced mine last year but I can't find the part number, since I just walked in the dealer and they ordered it for me.

I just did this to mine this evening. Took about 25 minutes. Easy as pie. Those two fittings, about 5 or 6 feet of 3/8" hose, two hose clamps, and a few zip ties.

You might just have bad axle seals. Been there and have done both.

Where are your axles leaking? If they are leaking from the ends of the axle shafts onto the drum brakes then your problem isnt your axle breather. Your axle seals are probably perished. Common problem on 3rd gen 4runners. You will have to pull your axle shafts to repair it. Ive got the same problem, what I did as a temporary fix was, I bought some stop leak for an automatic tranny and put it in the diff, this swells up the seals and helps to stop the axles from leaking. And to answer your original question the diff breather is located on top of the housing, just put a wrench on it, it screws right out.

Mine had started to leak a small amount of oil into the passenger side drum, enough to dribble some out of the drum and onto the wheel. The breather was completely stuck shut. Freed that up, cleaned up the brake on the passenger side, and it's been dry for the last ~20K miles (180K then, 203K now).

I'm not saying that's the case for all axle leaks, of course. But before replacing it, just check that breather. And if it's stuck shut, fix that and see if the leak stops.
