How do you value these 4th Gen Leftovers?

I am amidst buying a 4Runner for the past couple months, and I am trying to justify value on the leftovers flooding in the market.

Why are there so many 4Runner leftovers? One dealer alone has 2 2007's that have never been touched. I have seen 3 total Limited leftovers, all the same color, same package. Seems like no one wants this except me?

Another dealer has a 2006 Sport Model with 200 miles on it, plastic still on everything.

What would you justify for these? "Invoice" on the Limited is roughly $33k?

It has been sitting, depreciating, sitting some more.

I feel fairly confident buying one because it is Toyota reliability behind it.

Any ideas?

If you're buying a new car, then THIS IS YOUR TIME! I would hit them below invoice for sure!

It doesn't surprise me that they have leftovers. Very few Toyota dealers up here in Canada even stock 4Runners any more. You have to order. Sounds to me like U.S. Toyota dealers got caught napping with excess 4Runner stock when the SUV market went south.

Have you heard the news lately? Our economy hit the crapper, jobless rates are at half-century highs, people are losing their homes, and gas cost $4.40 a gallon last summer.

Every dealer has leftovers of every model, mostly SUV's, because most people can't afford new cars right now, and of the ones that can, most are buying more efficient cars.

Throw some lowball offer out there because they mentioned on the news last night that car sales may start going back up and you'll lose your chance to get a screaming deal!

2008 Leftovers, fine. But 2006 and 2007's? Yikes.

They wanted just north of 36K on the 2007 Limited.

I guess they felt the need to start somewhere. I started well below 30.

They said below 30 isnt happening.

You can go to edmunds.com and find the original dealer invoice and holdback data. I don't think 30k is a bad offer for a 37k list if it's been sitting for that long on their lot. There is probably 5k minimum in profit on that thing counting all the incentives. I hope a bunch of these crooked dealers go out of business over their sales tactics.

Obviously the economy plays into that and as another member posted, it ain't just 4R's that are collecting dust on dealer's lots. It also depends on what region you live in. I live in CO and SUV sales usually usually spike in the fall/early winter. I'm guessing 4R's are not flying off the lots here right now.

leftyguns21 posted an interesting article from MSN a while back suggesting that now is actually a great time to buy an SUV, specifically siting the difference in purchase price, cost of ownership, fuel consumption, etc. of a 4Runner with the V8 vs. a Highlander hybrid, stating that the V8 4R might be a better buy right now than a Highlander hybrid!

With the excess inventory of vehicles, poor SUV sales and Toyota's historically good resale value, I would say now is a great time to buy a 4R. Also, with commodities traders and oil speculators caught with their pants down after last summer's record high gas prices, I don't envision a huge spike in gas prices this summer like we saw last summer. Will gas prices continue to go up between now and late summer? Yes. Will they be as high as last summer with lower demand and a poor economy? I don't think so.

The story I know of is the man who saved $10,000 on a Silverado versus paying full retail for a small hybrid. The 5-10k saved in the purchase is a good couple years of gas.

I ditched the losers at the one dealer.

I have a used 2008 with 30k in the mix on Saturday. I expect I will pull the trigger. The asking price is starting at a reasonable level.

There are definately deals to be had. My dad purchased an 08 urban runner, 4wd for $28,500. Sticker was 37k. This was this past december. Unreal

28K For a new Urban? Wow. That says something.

Unfortunately, the Northeast is flooded with off-lease SR5's and little availability on new 08-09 Limited's

Now, if I buy a vehicle out of state. What exactly do I incur in terms of taxing and trying to register?

Am I paying fees/taxes to the dealer?

How do my temp plates work, is it universal across state lines?

I find it hard to believe there is left over 07's .

Trucks and SUV's are selling ok around here and holding used value's relatively well considering the times. I have not noticed much of an impact in my local (toyota) dealers lot. They had a LOT of 08's 2 months back ( I'm talking like 20+) there are 4 left. Granted some could have went to other dealers too.

Thai is correct , if you want to be spending money in this economic time , nows the time to buy.

Also yes you can get great deals , but they are not going to lose money on them.

I can only speak from what I see and I see plenty of new full size trucks and suv's on the road that are new. Quite a few Sequoias , even a few new LC's . We have a heavy 4R population around here.

I have seen alot of used H3's though as of just lately.

Sad but true. This dealer has two. Same options, same colors. They are 40,300 and 40,600 MSRP.

Another dealer has a 2006 with 200 miles on it. Sport.

A couple months ago, I was offered 26,000 on a 2006 Limited with 100 miles on it.

It happens.

I paid $24k for my 2007 limited with 34,000 miles on it 6 months ago. It has just about every option available - air suspension, xreas, nav, JBL, side air bags, and it was certified used. I have a Vehicle Inquiry Report (dealers around here don't like to give these out) for my truck and it has two prices on it: Dealer $37160 and Retail $43795. It's amazing how much these things depreciate after only 30k miles! Maybe this info will help when determining what to offer them for a new one.

Where are you located?

I have a "no-haggle" offer of 25,900 for an 08 Limited with 35k miles on it.

Carfax looks good. Service every 5,000 miles. Personal vehicle.

At one point, it was going 3,000 miles a month based on the dates of the history.

Probably is highway mileage which doesn't hurt one at all. I would want to talk to the previous owner to determine how the miles were put on.

I'm in Minnesota, but I bought the truck from a Toyota dealer in Atlanta and drove it back home. The miles on mines were a bit high for only a year too, but I also had records from the dealer for maintenance and a clean car fax so it didn't bother me at all. It's not uncommon for me to put 30k+ on in a year either.
