How does AWD work in a 3rd gen limited?

Hey all,

What exactly happens when I hit the AWD button on my 4Runner? Does it activate a solenoid to engage the front diff or what? Mine currently isn't working but 4HL works fine. So I need to figure out how the system works before I can start troubleshooting.

Yes depressing the 4wd button on the hi/lo shifter will electrically connect the center diff to the front diff. (you can usually hear a click on engagement/disengagement).

Kinda confused when you say, "Mine currently isn't working but 4HL works fine." How can 4HL work but not AWD? When you hit the 4wd button do your 4wd dash lights come on or do u just get the blinking orange circle?
