how does this 4 wheel drive work?

I bought an 04 with the V8 and full-time 4WD. I've never had a full-time 4WD vehicle before. I'm trying to fifure out how this works, does it stay in four-wheel-HIGH all the time?
There a switch on the dash that has H4 and L4. Theres also the VSC button. Reading the manual there something about locking and unlocking the center differential ??
Is that button for "locking" the 4WD ?
