How far have you pushed your stock tires?

I used the stock dunlops for 18k miles. After this road trip my wife was ok with me upgrading to better tires. Almost getting stuck in the middle of the desert with no cell phone coverage was a good selling point to upgrade. I now have 275 All Terrains. E load rating.

This was a super sketchy salt flat on the Utah/Nevada border. The car got stuck in 4 Hi, and i was barely able to claw my way out in 4low. When there is a sign warning you that the saltflats are wet and you will get stuck, heed them.

Isn't that a no-brainer for an ordered rig, and how different is that from having several different radio options?

Radio options don't affect ride quality or overall fleet mpg ratings. Tires do.

The day I bought my T4R I remember thinking "damn those tires are weak". Two days later my girlfriend and I drove to Cap Rock Canyon TX. On the way, I pulled over to take a photo and when I got out I heard a hissing sound. I looked down and there were two briars sticking out of the front driver side tire. I couldn't believe how easily they punctured. I drove directly to a discount tire and had them replaced. It's my personal opinion/experience that the dun flops are worthless. Unless your T4R is a pavement princess....in that case, ROLL ON!!

Ahh, Dunflops. I tried to get the dealer to swap them out for some ATs but they refused. I guess they just wanted the Dunflops off the lot (along with my '14 TE Premium).

After 2 flats in the first 6000 miles I'm pretty sure the Dunflops are not something I want to live with very much longer. They're ok for dirt roads and sand dunes but I would not want to use them in Mexico, the land of 1,000 flats.

Ive got the stock Bridgestones and i've gone on some easy, but rocky trails without any issues.

I do have a question though, I dont know how strong the sidewall is on the stocks, is it safe to air down on them?

I would not air down much with the stock tire. Maybe only 27 or so to smooth the ride out. Anymore than that and you take more of a chance cutting the vulnerable sidewall on a rock.

I feel the stock tires are only highway tires at best.
Bridgestone Duelers....
Had my road hazard policy replace one after I ran across a section of utility repair area between the highway and a store parking lot thru some limestone.
I should have taken a photo of the piece of limestone rock sticking out of the tire. Stuck in the tread area but where it is considered the sidewall, so they replaced the tire.
Really soft IMHO!

on my 2010 I replaced the Dunlops after a few months, before we drove from Texas to Alaska (Cooper ATRs, loved em)

On the current ride - I've had it for a month and already replaced the Bridgestones. Much like those Dunlops, the sidewalls are weak and mushy, really disappointing IMO that they sell such garbage tires on such great vehicles

Which tires would you put on it? ATs, MTs, something else? And which ones specifically? The small percentage of TE owners who actually take theirs off road would probably replace whatever you put on there as the stock tires with their own personal preference - not to mention many of them also go to 285s. Then you'd also get the majority of TE owners who never take it off road complaining about the ride quality and road noise. These come with street tires because 99.99% of all test drives are on the street and probably 99% of them stay on the street after they're purchased - even Trail Editions.

I would just want better street tires if nothing else. Most all-terrains offer a superior highway drive than the stock tires. It baffles me (cost aside) why MFRs don't put tires on their vehicles that make them drive more favorably. But I guess Toyota isn't concern about sales figures :cheers:

I traveled from Saratoga Springs, NY to Bremerton, Wa with the stock tires towing a Uhaul trailer. Hit snow in some parts and they behaved wonderfully. I wouldn't offroad in the stock tires. Eventually got some duratracs and never looked back.
