How Fast is it Safe To Go in My 4Runner?

So I do a lot of driving on very very rural roads. I am often above 90 miles per hour, and 100 to 110 are often reached. I am afraid to keep it above 100 for long though, as I am afraid either my tires will burst or something will fail. I think the absolute fastest I've had it is about 118mph or so, but it will go faster though I am afraid. I have Geolander a/t-s tires. I have a 2006 4runner limited. No lift kit or anything. Can I just keep it over 100? Can I push past the 120 mark? Or should I be worried? Thanks a bunch!

i think that you should check the speed rating on your tires if you're worried about them bursting.

I'm not gonna give you the safety lecture, because I doubt you wanna hear it, but just be careful...

I usually think of windy roads with lots of deer when you say very very rural...

I don't think you need to worry about the tires bursting that would not be my main concern but more so driving that fast on any SUV is suicide if you ask me
It's just not possible to do an emergency maneuver on this type of vehicle or an emergency stop at high speeds. I personally don't go pass 70 or 80 mph.
 
check the tire speed rating as mentioned above.... if you're driving 110mph on tires rated for 85mph max (hey some are!) then don't expect to live through it if they separate.
 
at 100+ in an SUV, I'd worry more about your surroundings than whether or not your tires will burst

I have no idea if the tires would pop, but as said before I'd be more worried about your immediate local environment. Deer, rabid squirrels and feral turtles are all a major danger to any vehicle going fast.

Me? I rarely get over 65. Gas cost too much imo.
 
Fastest I went was 120+ (Speedo stopped there so I dunno how much more I managed,) though to be honest, after that I kind of lost the desire to go that fast in my 4Runner, even with the V8... I normally hit about 75~80mph on freeway if traffic is going around that, sometimes tip up to 90mph on long trips on cross-state highways, though the tires have worn enough from off-roading and such that I have a tire imbalance at about 90 and it annoys me.

I used to go 90 - 100, it feels stable, but i do have wider tires. Just make sure you have the right tire pressure and check the tires for cracks and damage and figure out if its still a good tire. Otherwise just drive the speed limit, dont they have highway patrols? Here in california, they hide where u cant see them until u pass them.

Safe vs unsafe doesn't mean much of anything even if you find someone who will describe it as "safe".

Here's a way to look at it. Whatever your statistical risk is driving at, say, 70mph; the risk is probably multiples of that when driving over 100mph. WAG - at least triple. If sustained, the risk only increases as tire stress is cumulative.

The tire risk is not so much bursting (unless impact or under-inflation) but separation of the outer belt from the inner which can cause the tread to fly off. Most tires these days are built with a cap ply that does a good job of resisting that type of thing, and it appears your tire is among them. That doesn't change my WAG above, though. It would have been higher, otherwise.
 
practice some swerving and braking (at 60) then (if the 4runner is still alive) give up a plan to swerve at anything faster than 40

Okay well thanks for all the responses. Ya, deer, and surprises would be major issues normally, but not here. It is extreme eastern Colorado. No trees at all. No hills, no nothing. You can see everything for hundreds of miles. If there were anything to the side of the road that could be blocking my view of something such as hills or trees, obviously I would not have driven so fast. But conditions are pretty okay where I was - I didn't even see another car the entire time I was on it.
 
my 2 cents..the 4ruuner isnt built for speed...maxy spped should be 90mph...have done 110mph ..but just for a few secs...i think i read somewhere on this forum that a 4runner doing 60mph needs 30meters to come to a stop when the brakes are fully/safely depressed.......so go figure the stopping distance at 110mph
