Basically, I have a P4/800 Intel D865 motherboard. What happens if I put in a 3.4 CPU and it can't take it (original manuel says 3.2 max w/ original BIOS). Does it throttle down or give a blue scrren warning? Prices have come down on these old CPUs, and some are on the way to me now. thanks guys.

If your board can't run the later processors it won't even try to boot. Read the AA (altered assembly) number located between the processor and the main power supply plug. If it is C27650-209 or later, C27646-210 or later, C26719-211 or later, C27648-208 or later, or C40926-202 or later (the important numbers in each case are the last three numbers) then you can install the latest bios (P13 or greater) and run up to a 3.40E GHz, 800 Mhz (side bus) with 1 MB L2 cache processor.:cheers:

Thanks. I went looking for BIOS updates, grabbed the latest that said 3.4. I have a 3.46 Extreme on the way here. YES! just cralwed around and I can see the AA-C28.
OK so it will boot or not. thanks much. (actually two CPUs coming, not sure which one I will hot rod. Think I will keep the Intel basic. The MSI board will be a fun one.)
