How helpful are tires?

I wondering how helpful it is to have bigger tires with more grips and rivets in them? Right now i have som regular road ones and sunk into mud hole and got stuck (got out eventually). Im wondering if i have tires such as those on most of your guy's 4runners will i have a really low chance of getting stuck in mudd? Thanks in advance!

bigger, more aggressive tires definitly do better in the mud compared to stock or road tires.

Okay I'll have to get some! i was down to the middle of the tire in mud! Locked center diff and put sticks under the tires and got right out :nerd:

I used to think tires did not make that much difference, but after having several sets of true mud tires on my old Tacoma I now know they make ALL the difference in the world. I have a semi aggressive a/t on my 4runner and in real slick mud I really wish I had mud tires! I slip and slide all over w/ the a/t's vs. the mud tires that get a much better bite even in slick mud. Having said that I'll make due w/ my a/t's. I spend most of my time on the highway and only need to get in the muck every once in a while during duck season. I figure I'll take the ole 4wheeler out when it gets real nasty!

Its all about the tires. I have 2 buddies with similar z71's. We all met up a local lakes flood plain, uninhabited yet, open to the public. The area was Texas Red River clay gumbo. This stuff was slick, getting out with rubber mud boots you'd bust your ass. I did several times. I road in the one with regular wrangler rt's. After getting stuck the 3 time in 20 min, we all piled in the other one. It was sporting a set of super swampers. Holy cow the night and day difference. The truck would break loose and rooster tail when heavy throttled, as you would want. The low speed acceleration was where those tires shined. 0 to 20 at a 1/4 throttle, yielded barely any tire spin and all forward movement. Starts and stops where effortless, like dry pavement. That night sold me on tires are 2/3'rds of off roading. So much that i have a set of ltx at's for daily driving, and are shopping for, fj wheels for a dedicated set of aggressive off road tires. To swap on when i want to get serious.

Tires are your car's connection to the ground. You can do what ever you want to the suspension of a vehicle and tune out a engine to outrageously fun numbers, but running the wrong rubber is gonna just ruin your day. It applies to regular cars to racers and even large construction vehicles.

You want a good tread pattern that will meet your needs, a solid construction to resist the damage and wear you'll be inflicting on them and proper composition.

Think about it this way, you don't run a set of Nexans on a Bugatti Veryon (if you're wondering the tires are about $20k a set... crazy I know!?) so why would you run slicks or road tires on an off-road rig?

Dude get yourself some tires. AT's (All Terrain). They don't have to be too aggressive but almost any AT is better then the OEM tires(Toyota Original Equipment Tires from factory)

Stock tires are useless in mud, all terrains are better but the tread load up with mud easily, mud tires are best in mud but loader and wear more quickly the rest of the time.
