How long are Cv's good for?

I ask this question because as far as I know my 4runner with 175k miles has the factory cv's. The boots need to be replaced but should I just replace the boots or should I replace everything? The previous owner never used 4wd so I'm not too concerned with it being abused, but they still could have 175k miles on them. Any advice?

if you only drive street you can have dry cvs for month but if you ever go offroad well good luck with that lol

It depends on if you off road like t4r4life said. If you do, I would buy new ones and re boot yours and just keep them as spares.

If you don't off road, you could probably just reboot them and be ok, but new ones should only cost about $50-60 bucks each after you get the cores back though.

I have over 210k miles on my original CVs. I did just re-boot them but did not replace them. I also wheel the piss out of my rig and they are holding up great.

Mine were fine until I replace the OEM struts with Bilstein HDs on my 99. Then the boots tore. I have a cousin who used to work not far from Downey Off Road so I bought their CV boot replacement kit and my friend removed and repacked them. They worked fine for 4 years until I replaced my LBJs last November. Then I began getting a clunk as I went over big speedbumps on the driver's side. Now the clunk is bad and I am guessing the CV has too much play (I thought this was the case when I replaced the LBJ). I drove too long with them dry. Oh well.

Just replace them with remanufactured ones.
