How many gears in 4LO?

OK, I've searched this forum and RTFM, and I can't find an answer to this question...... how many gears are used in 4LO? I have an '04 LTD V6 4WD, which has the 4 speed tranny. When I shift into 4LO, it only shifts through 3 gears, not 4. Also, it really lurches when it shifts. I don't use 4LO at all, really, but it would seem to me that such a good transmission would shift more smoothly than this.

The lurching is normal because its geared so low.

As far as shifting gears I would think it would be 4 , but maybe there is some type of over ride that does not let it go into OD mode.

In 4LO you are limited to 35mph so maybe it is related to why you can only go up to 3 gears?

I think it is lurching because the gearing goes much lower and the power is multiplied suddenly. This is my first 4WD so maybe someone who has driven more can comment.

The 5-speed only shifts through 4 so I'm not surprised. Play around in low range until you can get it to shift relatively smoothly. That's how to drive it. Be very careful manually downshifting in low range, too.

Every suv I have had (on my 5th) with a low range transfer case would lurch in low range.
