How many is too many, Miles?

I have a 2011 Limited with 244K. Has been well taken care of, 80%+ freeway miles. Runs great, looks great. How many miles would one expect with these motors? Do most get apprehensive at this many miles and look for a lesser mileage 4Runner?

Seems if you need another engine the only real option is getting one from a junked 4Runner, as the rebuilds are mostly poor.

I think 500-700k from normal wear if properly maintained.
These engines are not overhaul friendly, but they don't really need to be. You can get an engine from salvage that I would trust 10 times out of 10 over some crap from Jasper.

People might need a little extra clarification if “properly maintained” means following the manual, or oil changes every 5k instead.

There are some makes, particularly Land Rover and Jaguar, with which following the manual (15,000 mi oil changes) can have you doing timing chains before 100k lol

I recall a video by Care Care Nut that said definitely don’t go with a rebuild but get a new kit from Toyota that has a block and some parts and use other parts off the old engine. A little more in cost but well worth it as you basically wind up with virtually a new engine.

if your definition of proper maintenance is the same as mine, it will last another 244 EASILY - of course wear and tear items will need to be taken care of

Agreed that 500k+ is not unreasonable. Keep the oil and other fluids fresh, and drive sensibly. Neglect and abuse are enemies. Rust, too, but it looks like you're in a good location for little rust.

Hell, my uncle put 350,000 miles on a 2006 with zero repairs, and decided to "stop pushing his luck" and then bought a brand new 2019.

These engines are understressed and very reliable with basic maintenance. The transmissions have legendary reliability. There's not much bad to point at on these vehicles, especially if you do not modify it.

Would increasing maintenance frequency help? Already do 5k oil changes. Just trying to figure out how to squeeze as many miles as possible. Any preventative parts worth replacing at this many miles?

We have 330K miles on a 2014. I do all the maintenance, fluid changes and repairs which have consisted of replacing the driver’s side air valve and the alternator. Engine oil gets change at 10K miles. Transmission flushed every 100K. Front and rear differential and transfer case every 50K. Truck sees 95% highway miles back and forth between SW Montana and SoCal.

5k oil changes are fine. what's important is you also change brake, diff, transfer, and transmission fluids regularly. keep the engine and cabin air filters clean too

I don't really believe in replacing parts as a preventative measure if they are working fine. the only time I'd do this for example is if I'm doing the brakes and want to replace old rotors or something. replacing an alternator, might as well do the drive belt while you're in there is another one I'd do. I wouldn't just order a new alternator because mine is 11 years old and swap it just in case

with an older vehicle regular checks in the engine bay and underneath will help spot early issues before they become big issues. 4runners are pretty good and beefy. they can take a lot of abuse and neglect and keep going. if you don't drive much do at least 1 oil change per year. don't overthink it, your rig has lasted a long time, just keep doing what you're doing
