How many Limiteds with XREAS out there...?

Reading the pre-purchase Sticky, I learned that XREAS was an option on Limiteds.

Just curious, how likely is it to run into one (and possibly avoid buying one with it)?

I have an 04 Limited with XREAS, but I can't give you a percentage of Limiteds with they system. Not sure why you would want to look for one without though. If you find one with XREAS that's not leaking then it will drive just fine. If you find one with leaking XREAS, you can negotiate the price down by a thousand and then spend less than half of that savings on 5100's! It's a win-win in my mind. Either way, if you ditch the XREAS for standard shocks/struts it's not an expensive swap.
 
It might depend on the Toyota region for any given model year. In our area I didn't see any Limiteds without XREAS when buying our '08 T4R V6 Limited.
 
My wife drives an 03 v8 limited that has xreas and I drive an 04 v6 that does not have xreas. both 4wd only difference is that one is the v8 with a 5 speed automatic transmission and one is a v6 with a 4spd automatic transmission.

Very helpful in dismissing my XREAS fears, I guess...!.
With the help of the forum, studying up on the shock swap, if and when needed should be easy.
 
Not sure how many are out there but here in nj I barely found any. Mine has it, and if most of the driving is on road then these are pretty dependable. Mine started to leak a few weeks ago but at 167k I think they have performed well. I do some light off roading (work on construction sites), and they've held up. I will be looking into the 5100 swap soon but it's cheaper than repairing the xreas. Best of luck with your future purchase!

If its a limited 4th gen runner it either has the rear air ride suspension or xreas, they did not offer a limited with just a basic SR5 suspension package.

the rear air ride suspension setup does not have the standard spring perches to accommodate regular springs without making a spring retainer piece if your interested in lifting or changing the suspension spring rate I'd just find one with xrea's.

Nothing...I've got the build sheet from the previous owner and all the service records. It never came with either. I thought it was weird too.

may have something to do with being an 07 they seemed to be getting away from rear air ride at that time. what kind of shocks did it come with?
 
didnt read thru all of them but starting with 03 rear air ride seems to be listed as an option but is combined with the xreas and at least up to 08 remains the same , this taken from 08 list- " Suspension is by double wishbones in the front and a four-link rigid type suspension in the rear, both systems with coil springs over gas shock absorbers. The 4Runner Limited V8 4WD model can be equipped with rear auto-leveling air suspension for improved ride and performance when towing or carrying heavy loads. This option is teamed with the unique X-REAS Sport Enhancement Suspension that is also standard on the 4Runner Sport Edition. " Toyota 4Runner History 2003

Ah, we now add "air ride" in the mix..!

I suppose all these variations can be easily identified by reaching the underside of the car and see:
classic shocks, or
shocks with RAS lines, or
air "columns" / bags?

..and possible fluid leak in case of XRAS?

you won't see RAS lines per say but on the rear axle you will see bags in place of springs, as well in the center console area there will be a rear height adjustment switch. As was previously stated if it has RAS it has XREA's as well.

Xreas can be identified by what looks like brake lines on the outside of the frame rails running to there cross over valves also located on the outside of the frame rail in the middle of the vehicle. you can follow those lines to each shock and check for leaks. you'll know from a test drive perspective as well if they are leaking because it will ride like shit.

If you see no rear bags and no hydraulic lines on the frame then its a standard SR5 suspension setup.

XREAS and RAS are nice, fancy suspension systems that sound good in theory - until they fail in real world applications.

My XREAS system leaked in the connecting lines, and as a closed system had to either be replaced in its entirety (way too expensive for me to afford) or a swap made to a more conventional suspension system (which I did).

Add to that my RAS had a sensor fail (also too expensive for me to replace), so my creative mechanic devised a manual inflation system to bypass the sensors.
