How many miles can you drive per tank?

you sea level guys are making me jelous. with past cars in WA i got better millage. with the 4runner with 16k on the clock i believe the best I've seen out of a tank is 330. usually in the 285-310 range. pretty much stock...i have 6112 in front but only at the first notch for now, no armor or anything. gobi rack going on in a month or so.

this had me very confused the first few fill ups I did at single digit range but only too ~20 gallons of the 23.5 listed in the manual. Then I searched around the board. In previous cars 0 meant get your but to the gas station right away, but not so much in this car.

2017 stock SR5 4x4 9000k 5 months old

350-375 with summer gas

325 to 350 with winter gas

I usually fill up between a quarter and empty and I am a very conservative driver.

I am glad I am not the only one to see a significant hit in MPG with winter blend gas. last few months I have lost almost 2MPG in my basically stock SR5P with 11k mi. Same driving habits.

I don't trust that computer crap on there anymore, since my 2011 SR5 left me on the side of the highway twice with 20 miles til empty showing. I have a 2014 Limited 4x4 now, and it definitely gets better mileage than the SR5.

Stupid question but how do you check your trip for fuel mileage. I see on the dash you can see your average but I can’t figure out how to see trip a and trip b for instance

You reset the MPG per trip or per fuel-up.

I found my winter gas mpg loss to be almost 3...I have an average of 20.8 (truck computer)/20.5 (Fuelly app) and with the winter gas I average 17.7 (truck computer)/ 17.3 (Fuelly app). My previous Tacoma and Rav4 also showed the same results with the same commute. I typically only use Shell, Sunoco or BP. I am far from an expert on fuel chemistry but from what little bit I have read about the subject it appears that the chemicals in winter blend gases burn at quicker rates than straight gasoline. I notice this when I use ethanol free gas (ethanol burn at a faster rate than gasoline)...all of the vehicles I have used it in has run smoother and constantly got slightly better mpgs (approx .5 mpg better). Stuff like this makes me question what the EPA or whatever government agency in charge is doing (And why they are even involved because clearly it isn't better)? I bet most people experience the same loss but just don't pay attention.

I test drove the 2018 last weekend and it seemed to be very sluggish in getting up to speed. My 2003 has great acceleration. Is it because the 2018s are so much heavier or what? It was very noticeable. I had to hit the accelerator to the floor to get the engine to rev and respond. Not the same as the accelerator response on my 2003. Forgot to mention, my 2003 is the V6 engine, not the V8.

That's a known gripe with 5th gens. They have the power, but in order to tap into it you have to mash the pedal.

There's something called the SprintBooster which can change the mapping of the pedal (or something like that) in order to get more power with a lighter touch of the pedal.

I had one of my best tanks / mpg wise yesterday and had 359 miles on the tank with about 1/4 tank left. The manual calculation of miles driven by gallons put in equaled 22.5 mpg. The computer was showing 23.4 mpg when I filled up.

As for driving that tank, I drove at least 75 miles in 4WD as I drove over two snow covered mountain passes of 9,500 feet or better. The one thing I was doing different is I kept my speed under 60 mph for most of the day.

I have noted that I get much better mileage keeping the speed down.

No real mods here, just removed roof rack and added C4Fab sliders and about 7,500 miles on the Pro. Oh and I was hauling around at least an extra 50 lbs. of snow and ice stuck to the wheel wells and siders.

This was the highlight of the tank

Since you must be wondering how I got that reading, it was observed about 60 miles into the trip, just after coming down a 7 mile grade out of the the Big Horn Mountains, after having been in 4WD for at least 30 miles, and I had not been applying the gas for quite some time. It took several steep hills for that average to drop down to a more normal average.

Unfortunately, not all of my tanks have been so kind to me. The computer was averaging around 18 mpg while driving across Minnesota and South Dakota, when I was driving 70 to 75 MPH.

Just drove across the country from VA to CA, drove offroad for maybe 15 miles of that near 3,000 mile trip. I averaged 15.8 miles the majority of the way, but in flatter terrain I was hitting 16.3 at times and getting as low as 15.1 in the hills.

Not sure exact weight additions, but I have 5, 285/70/17 tires, C4 Sliders, and the C4 Lo Pro Bumper with the winch. I'm guessing this is somewhere around 400 extra pounds? I did have my original 4 wheels and tires in the back as I was selling them to someone, so maybe closer to 500 in the end afterall.

Not trying to resurrect and old post BUT i'm a little concerned with my change in MPG. I just moved from Honolulu, HI to Atlanta, Ga and my fuel economy has totally tanked. I used to get 330 miles per tank in Hawaii (stop and go/heavy traffic) and now in Ga I'm getting 220 miles per tank (city driving). I wouldn't think I'd lose 110 miles per tank going from city driving to city driving. There's more hills here and right now its waaay colder....could that influence MPG that much?

I normally fill up after I've driven somewhere between 260 and 330 miles. I dont let it get too low if I can help it. I believe the computer says I can go 350-370 miles once I fill up. Mileage at last fill-up was 45,235.

I've averaged 18.49 mpg over 21 fill ups with a low of 15.70 MPG pulling a trailer and a high of 20.61 MPG.

I would think that maybe the combo of hills and possibly the quality of gas are at play. I wouldnt expect to see that much of a drop either.

Thanks for your response. I didn't think about the computer. I wonder if it needs to recalibrate after being on a ship and sitting in a lot for 2 months. Although I've been driving it for a month. Maybe I'll disconnect the negative terminal for a bit and see if that helps.

only have 1,600 miles mostly city driving and my avg is 16.2 MPG not super heavy on the pedal at all. Looking to get a pedal commander to help with that since real world reports are pretty good.

Hey neighbor.. my stock Pro hasn't averaged better than 17.8 in the 22k miles I've put on it in the last year.

Maybe the 20MY will be better :rockon:

I only have had my 4runner almost 3 months. I get different miles per tank all the time. Once I filled up it was just about empty miles passed zero and said 410 till empty. then was about 380-370 but lately its been 350-360. never had a vehicle that changed so much :help: lol
