How many miles considered normal for brake pads?

Rotated tires on my '08 4Runner 4WD V6 the other day at 40k miles. Brake pads still look great! Lots of meat still left. So, just curious; how many miles do most of you get from your brake pads?

(Please don't turn this into another frozen caliper thread!! Thanks).

Depends...No one answer. Driving style...towing....type of driving (highway vs city)...all have an influence on how long brake pads last. My last pads lasted about 55k miles.

I am running around 84k on my 2006 4runner with original pads.. Pads still looking good. My brother just changed his on his 2002 4runner with about 120k on it... really depends on your driving style.

I have a 03 V8 and I'm a pretty relaxed driver. I don't tow anything either. I seem to be changing my brake pads about every 30K. I thought that wasn't normal but never really gave it much thought. Its also the dealer telling me this when I get my oil changed.

I got about 85K on the rears. Fronts were changed due to a caliper. I drive very agressively.

Lots of variables. I have heard that the general rule of thumb, loosely agreed to by the industry is that they should last between 30k to 70k; obviously driving style is a huge factor so I wouldn't be shocked if people who do mostly highway driving, where you get away with 2 hours and no braking can make it to 100k.

Me. Pads were replaced with calipers at 60K, and I just replaced them at 110k. They had probably 10k or so more on them, but I was replacing the calipers and figured why not.

That gives them 50k of actual lifetime and in my estimate potential to be 60k.


If you are getting over 30k then I would imagine you got quality pads. Since how your drive and how you brake is so important to this, it is going to be hard to compare.
