How many miles is too many?

I'm looking at a 2001 4Runner with 190,000 miles. I looked at the carfax and it has been dealership serviced all of it's life. One of the reason I am considering a 4Runner is the longevity of most 4Runners. When is it just too many miles?

For these trucks, too many would probably be 250k-300k. How much are they asking?

It really depends on price, 190,000 is higher but if the rest of the truck is in good to great shape it comes down to are you prepared for the worst.

I just bought a 98 with 280k yesterday. Every truck is different. Some last 150k, some got 350+. If its in good shape and has service records, I say go for it.

Last December we bought a 97 with 198k on it. I just rolled to 214k this morning and I haven't had any major problems. Just regular maintenance stuff. What's the asking price?

I would say buy it because I consider a 4runner a worthy investment compared to alot of other vehicles out on the road today. make the commitment to maintain it and it will last you many more miles. I look at this way. I would rather put money into parts and maintenance than to have a fancy new car with the payment.

Brian11, where are you located? That has a lot to do with price and to some extent, determining what you should expect to get out of it mileage wise.

If dealer service at correct intervals, that truck, esp. since it's a 2001, has a Lot of life left. Just make sure you have a new rad or external trans cooler installed. If you don't know about 'strawberry milkshake', search on it or read the 3G Buyer's guide in the stickies. Read that anyway, if you haven't.

Just curious--timing belt interval is 90k. Have they done two, as it is past due for the second? The dealer will charge ≈$1000 for this job and you should do water pump, idlers, drive belts and some other stuff at the same time. Just so you know....certainly good to bring up when haggling if it has not been done.

Kind of wondering if this is why it's for sale.

I just purchased one from a local Toyota dealer (2000 SR5, 175,000 miles) for $4,700.

Definitely talk them down on price, but I love mine so far. Take care of it and I'm sure it will last a long time.

personally id buy it mine had a 176k on it when i got it and its a 99 limited 4wd and they wanted 9gs for it i got it down to about 5400 after and love it wouldnt ever get anything but a 4runner personnally if its clean and maintaned id go for it

I'd buy it if it was closer to me. I bought my 99 with 186ish now she has 194000. I'm hoping I can get another 306001 miles from her.

Test drive it, if it feels good and strong, its more than likely good and strong.

I bought mine for 2900 and it had 200k on it. Im now at 215k and everytime i've had it serviced they tell me its going another 100k+.

My dad and I haggled the guy down (he was selling it in the newspaper classifieds if you believe people still do that) because it needed brakes and shocks. It was a 2000 highlander, factory e-locker. After test driving we both knew it was 100% a go and bought it on the spot. Its my DD and i feel more confident in this than i do in my dads 2010 jeep.

See if it had it's 180k-200k mile maintenance. i just did mine at 180k on my '97 and ran me about $2000 for full timing, major seals, etc. Just make sure it wasn't traded in because it's due time for this maintenance. Otherwise we have 4 4runners at work, mine has the lowest miles at 180k, then 230k, then about 270k and then 475k miles. Regular maintenance can go a long way.

My current 99 limited 4X4 has 234K, i bought it at 222, so far replaced valve cover gasket, timing belt, water pump, and had a leak in the rear axel. But overall a great vehicle I wouldnt trade it for any other suv on the market

I would buy it. It doesn't have an e locker cause 01-02 didn't have the e locker option. They have a center diff lock

I purchased my 1999 SR5 2WD in May with 221K and it already has 223,843. I paid $4,000.

Just returned from a business trip to Louisiana for hurricane relief support w/ 3 coworkers on board. 800 miles and no worries & zero issues. I just lost the antenna motor but haven't decided which way to go yet so for now i just wait 30 seconds for motor to time out, radio still works.

I may have paid a small premimum but seller wouldn't budge and it was CLEAN. I'm looking to get 300k+ and think it'll be money well spent; love it. I'd buy it for sure.
