Hi All

I'm looking at buying a 98 4Runner. Seller states the vehicle has been maintained well but what advice or things should I look at/for when I go check out the truck? Has 144k miles and pics look okay. It's a 98 so I just want it to run dependably. It's the 3.4 limited and has some interior snags but nothing out of the norm.

I think a lot of us have used this buyer's guide. It's tried and true and a great guide for what to look for. To sum it up - check the frame and drivetrain for bad rust, check the tranny fluid for strawberry milkshake, and make sure the 4wd and locker (if you have it) engages quickly and without too many clunks. Make sure there is no transmission slippage and it would be handy if they'd replaced the timing belt recently (last 50k miles or so).

Also a longtime lurker because I didn't own one - that is, until this weekend. After months of searching I finally bought an EXTREMELY clean 2000 4x4 Limited, white/silver, and no problems other than a small exhaust leak that needs to be patched. 200k on the clock and got it for an absolute steal at 4,400 cash. So glad to finally have one!

Thanks Travis! I have always loved 3rd gen 4Runners - could have gotten a newer one but none of them have ever really "done it" for me quite like the 3rd gens do. The perfect truck in my mind. I intend to come here often, but hopefully it won't be because I'm searching for solutions to problems that crop up :biggrin1:

If anyone here is in the Southern Indiana area, I'm in Evansville. Would love to see if there are any locals on this board!
