Just passed 230k not too long ago on my 96. I don't drive it every day, mostly used as my off road rig now so it won't rack up very quick.

202k, purchased few years ago with 170k. DD. Still runs like the day I bought it. Started riding in a carpool van to keep those miles in check. Old commute was 330 miles a week..new commute to commuter lot, 11 miles a week!

I'll probably jinx myself here, but...
Original engine and transmission.
The most "major" repair so far has been installing new fuel injectors and a fuel pump about 3 months ago.
The clock did die this week though.

Love seeing all these high-mileage trucks. Got my 1998 with 225K miles from the original owner along with every single maintenance record/receipt since he bought it. This thing was built 10 month before I even got my learners permit!

I have 265k on my 99 Highlander but just blew a head gasket. (Motor is hydro locked) Mechanic says probable cracked heads... $2500-$2800. Wondering if I should buy a low mileage motor ~100k miles and replace the whole thing for about $4000. I've had it since 68k miles and this is the first non maintenance repair .

I don’t know about 4Runners, but my other truck was a ‘01 Pathfinder that blew a head gasket at around 200K. Fortunately, Nissan has excellent field service manuals which are readily available online. I dropped the trans, yanked the engine, tore down the top end, removed the heads, and replaced the head gaskets. Reinstalled engine and trans...so far no issues after another 50K Miles.

I couldn’t get any local shop to even quote the job.

I’ve wondered if the 4Runners have similar manuals available, but I haven’t looked either.

Radiator Replacement & Tranny Flush

Not trying to hi-jack this thread, so this post can be deleted if needed. However, out of curiosity I have been reading a lot of other threads regarding radiator replacements and transmission flushes. So with the obvious high mileage these trucks seem to reach...is it best to replace the radiator and flush the trans fluids if you have no idea when or even if these things have ever been done to the truck? I don't want to throw money at something that is working, nor do I want to wake a sleeping monster. However, I don't want to assume everything is ok and its on the verge of breaking.

Replacing the radiator is a good preventative measure to reduce chances of killing the transmission. Along with replacing the radiator many will also suggest to run an external transmission cooler instead of running it through the radiator. It’s a cheaper expense that will give you ease when you read the possible horror stories of neglect.
You don’t have to flush the trans, it’s rather difficult. Just drain and add fluid over the course of time.
Next suggestion will be to replace the lower ball joints if there’s no record of them being replaced in last 75,000 miles.
Then kick back and enjoy your bad ass truck
