How many miles on your 4runner?

Rolled 300,000 miles last night. But I am about to have to do some major transmission work. The previous owner was not kind and used the supercharger to flog it like a race car.

I'm at 290k km on my 99 limited now - just starting to show signs of a head gasket issue.

She’s been parked for the better part of the last 6 months as I’ve been busy with other things. But the old girl is about to get a wake-up call so I can smog her once again.
I’ve got a new cat that’s about to go on. The original OEM cat just barely squeaked by last time – so I’m not even going to attempt trying to smog without a new cat first. Also picked up a new intake tube since the original finally shit the bed.
This will probably be the last time I’ll have to smog her — while she has less than half a million miles I mean ... :hat:

Holy shit. I read a post about you having tranny issues at around 350k I believe, throwing the fun P0773 code. How did you go about fixing that, did you swap in a new trans?
I just picked up a 97 with a mere 230k on her, she shifts like butter but I can't get that damn code to clear. Cheers

Yeah I started having the tourqe converter lock/unlock randomly at freeway speeds and shifting was a little delayed around town.
If I recall correctly, I just swapped out all three solenoids in the tranny with some I bought on Amazon and then did a 16 quart tranny fluid flush with Valvoline MAXlife ATF (red bottle) by way of pulling a cooler line to the radiator and using the transmission itself to pump the fluid out. Very gentle this way.
No problems since the replacement and it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than a new transmission! Give it a shot! I don’t remember what I paid for the solenoids but I don’t think it was more than $150
Wow...that's insane. Definitely think I'll swap out the solenoids, though I think it's odd I'm getting that code when I'm having zero trans problems. Could I also just do a drain and fill after replacing the solenoids?

What bulbs did you use on your dash there? Looks great! No hotspots?

Sure you could do a drain & fill instead of a flush.
As for having the code without any sign of actual problems, it could just be a hiccup of some sort. If you aren’t having any trouble and this is the first time the code has shown up, just clear it and see if it returns. Monitor your transmission closely for any changes. I would not replace the solenoids until the code returns or the transmission starts to shift different.

It’s been a few years so I can’t recall off-hand what specific bulbs they are, but I figure the bulbs aren’t available anymore anyways. I’ll dig around for the info though. I do remember they were from SuperBrightLEDs. They are still going strong without any hotspots though!
