my 3rd gen was t boned and was totaled, fuccer hit and run me and made me rolled 4 times across the intersection. how i got the 4th gen, a old friend spoted me at his work ( oakland downtown toyota) and i told him i was looking for a sport edition 4runner 4wd v6. and thats how a small road trip started, he drove a new camry to redwood city toyota with me and my dad and i droved the new 4runner from there back to oakland. very nice drive/ride. power too, my 3rd gen had only a 2.7 in there.

I did, and a secong gen before that and a first gen before the second. Primary reason I got rid of my third gen was because it was a 2wd. I got into the muscle car thing and tried that a while after seliing, didn't take long before I wanted another 4runner. I got the 4th gen because it was more refined, felt much better on road, and primarily the v8 motor.

I bought my 97 new from the dealer and had it till Dec 2010. It had 240K miles and it ran great, but things wear out. It was time for all engine and suspension OEM to be replaced. I was thinking if selling for a few years, but bought a 350z instead. I then drove the 3rd gen part time. I put an ad on Craigslist (as a feeler) and ended up getting 10 calls the first day. The first guy who came by to see it - bought it. I was "forced" to make a quick decision. Originally, I wanted a FJC; then a Highlander (for the kids) and ending up finding my 2004 Sport T4R on Craigslist a few days later. I was impressed with lots of power (compared to 3rd gen), ride, and overall refinement. I do admit that the "style" was no love at first sight and has grown on me.

I had a 3rd Gen that I sold with 188k on it. It was getting tired and instead of putting money into it I got my dream car - '04 Audi S4 Avant 6MT(promotion at work helps). Only drove the S4 for a year as it was super expensive to maintain and all these little things kept going wrong with it (reverse lights stuck on - wouldn't turn off, right window switch worked sometimes, etc). Plus my wife and I had a little girl and the car seat would barely fit in the back.
So I sold it in early Feb and just picked up a 2005 V8 SR5 that I'm in love with. Just started modding it with lots more to come. I considered another 3rd Gen but was sold on the V8 after I drove it. Gonna drive this rig into the ground now...

I had a black '98 SR5 back in the day...loved it! Upgraded to black '07 limited. All for the V8!

I had a '98 sr5 2wd and really wanted 4wd so I started looking at 4th gens. I realized I wouldn't be able to get what I wanted without a little more cash so I started saving and at the same time, narrowed down my specific criteria. Once I learned that in 09 Toyota offered a Trail Edition, I knew that was what I wanted. Took a year of saving and diligent searching but I finally found what I wanted and could not be happier with it. Significantly more powerful motor, much nicer interior, good towing performance, and more space everywhere means this truck fits my needs to a T.

My '99 SR5 had over 250k miles and was just beginning to have
frequent issues. Cat replaced, O2 sensors, muffler, etc. I just felt
it was time to replace. It was a 5 speed and I do miss that occasionally.
I love how smooth the '05 V8 is.
Before the '99 I had a '91 with over 300k.
It is likely I will always drive a 4Runner.

I had a '98 SR5 with the 3.4L and a 5-speed manual. Mods included a TRD clutch, OME suspension, and some little stuff. Loved that vehicle, sold it and a bunch of toys to build a new house, and missed it since the day it drove away! That was summer of '07... purchased my Gen4 September '10 and am glad to be back!

1997 HiLux Surf SSRX Limited. Great truck, but rattled like crazy. A little lethargic on acceleration (I-4 turbo diesel). This wasmy 1st 4Runner so to speak. Sold it to get the my next 3rd gen;
2000 HiLux Surf SSRG. This model had an intercooler and was peppier. Optitron gauges and all (instruments that were only available in Japan). Loved that truck. Got married and returned to the states. Had to sell her

i had a 99 and loved it but i kept blowing rear axle seals so i got tired of replacing them and went a upgraded
we had a 98 T4R 2WD, transmission was replaced once, rear end was replaced once and was still not quite right (still was making strange noises), and it was throwing several different trouble codes on the reader.
after dumping almost 5k in parts alone into it in one year, my wife and i decided to cut our losses and sell it as is (it didn't even have 80k miles on it).
she wanted another T4R, so we got her a 4G back in '06. she has yet to put 10k miles on it - it just sits in the garage, mostly.

I had a 3rd Gen before I moved up to the 4th Gen.....had it passed down and decided to get the "newer" model, didn't care for the brand new T4R's to be honest and I've always liked the style of the 4th Gens!

I think we will sell the '99 soon though since I have my S60R now and the carseat fits (albeit very tight). Our '99 has 198k mi on it and aside from a few minor things (new driveshaft U-joints, axle seal) has been unbelievably reliable, but with the baby and the summer temps here, I thought something newer would be a good idea because I didn't want to risk my wife and baby getting stranded w/o A/C or with some drivetrain problem in 110 degrees. Plus, it's about due for tires and timing belt and a few other things, so it didn't really make sense to throw a bunch of money into it. We really like the '04 V8 sport that we picked up to ultimately replace it.

I bought a 96 in 03, it had 160K kms (100K miles) on it. Nicely loaded SR5 with moonroof and diff. lock, added some PIAA's and BFG A/T's and drove it another 6.5 years and 100K kms (60K miles). It had 265K km's when I sold it October 2009. Still miss it a lot, see it driving around sometimes and am half tempted at times to see if the new owner would be interested in selling back to me as I'd love to build one for a wheeler.
Either way, had our 04 since July 08 and still love it. At 125K kms now and still no problems and still loving the smooth power of the v8 everytime I drive it.

I had a couple of Pathfinders before joining the ranks of the 4runner. When I bought my 90 Pathfinder I looked at the 4runner...but that generation 4runner didn't have enough legroom for my 6'3" frame. Every time I shifted or braked...my knees would hit the steering wheel. The Pathfinder had much more room.
Bought another Pathfinder in 98 when my 90 had about 310k miles...Still running great..but starting to get too much rust.
Kept my 98 Pathfinder til 05 when my daughter needed a reliable vehicle for college. So instead of buying her a new vehicle I gave her my 98 Pathy which had about 290k miles....She finally sold it to her ex-BF when she started Graduate school at Harvard....It had almost 400k miles and still running good.
I find the Pathfinder and the 4runner to be very comparable vehicles....Bout the same reliability and functionality. I now have 190k miles on my 4runner...and the only issue has been sticky calipers. I've replaced the front calipers twice now. (My pathfinders had the original calipers when I got rid of them). Only other problem was with the radio...which I replaced with a Kenwood (built in HD). The truck runs PERFECT. Easily expect to reach 300k miles
