How much are people paying for the NEW 4Runner?

I am in the market for a new SUV/Truck.

I have several pre sale questions about the new 4runner that I would love your advice and opinions on.

Back story: I drive a Mazda 3 (2014). Good solid reliable car. Just too small for our upcoming needs. We are about to buy some land and will need some hauling and towing ability. Audio quality in the stereo is important to me and IS part of my buying decision.

I’ve considered:
Highlander
Infinity QX50
Ford Edge
Nissan Murano
Acura brand
Lexus Brand
Santa Fe Sport
2016 Toyota Tacoma

Here is where I am at with each:

Highlander (eliminated due to the terrible JBL audio quality)
Infinity QX50 (eliminated due to zero towing capacity even though the salesman said it could tow)
Ford Edge (Still in contention but have serious concerns about overall reliability with ford products
Nissan Murano (eliminated after hearing too many stories about the CVT tranny. Which eliminates the Pathfinder too)
Acura brand (Eliminated. Not keen on premium gas and to get towing I have to sell my kids)
Lexus Brand (also eliminated due to premium gas and mortgaging the kids)
Santa Fe Sport (decided it was too plastic and cheap from the reviews I saw, did not even bother driving it)
2016 Toyota Tacoma (Now this one…..I waited 4 months for the 16’s to arrive. Found one spec’d out exactly as I wanted it. NEVER drove a pickup truck before in my life. It bounced around like I was on the back of a bull in a rodeo. Headroom sucked and I am only 5’8…has to do with the moon roof eating up head room, steering was gooey and loose)

The Ford Edge is a geeks dream. More technology than I have ever seen in a car and the stereo is amazing and LOUD! But Ford reliability…..


So…I now find myself looking into the 4runner. But have some basic questions.
1. Does it handle like a pickup truck or more like an SUV?
2. Does the premium stereo in it suck as bad as the one in the Highlander?
3. How is the steering on the 4runner?


That’s actually about it! Before I rattle the cage of my Toyota salesman I need to know these two things. No doubt it can tow what I need towed.

Let me save you some time:
The 4Runner is not a comparable product to anything you have listed above. It is a BOF SUV. It has a live rear axle and a transfer case. It is a truck basically and will not ride nor handle as well as those vehicles you listed above. It gets 20 mpg... on the highway... that is the best you will do.
It tows 3500 lbs good. Going up to 5K towing regularly I would get something else to tow.
Stereos are subjective. To get the best stereo you need to buy the Limited which you can get around $40K+.
If you are thinking about a 4Runner you need to test drive test drive test drive every model you can. Again, they are BOF. Their closest competitor is a Jeep Unlimited not a Jeep Grand Cherokee. They are built to go off road so their on road manners are compromised. Everything you listed above (except the Tacoma) is built to stay on the highway, regardless of their marketing.

I would also look at the Dodge Durango if you need decent towing capability and don't go offroad....or not if you're scared of perceived unreliability.

If you feel like you were taken to the cleaners on your extended warranty, many states let you cancel it within the first 60 days. You can then shop around online or read some to the threads on this forum to figure out which dealer has the best price. The warranties are honored at any dealer regardless of which one you bought it from.

Very happy to find the newbie section and finding the pricing. This will help when i go to deal for the 4runner. I know getting a trd pro will require a premium, but hopefully I will be able to get a killer deal.

I'm now exploring the hertz car sales route since you can get a pretty decent deal on SR5s with 4wd with out all the extra crap the dealers load up the vehicles with. They'll probably be missing the nav, but I honestly don't think I'd use the built in nav very often--the phone will be used in areas with cell coverage and the garmin when in the boonies.

I know the stigma against rental cars but my current vehicle is a previous rental, and I've already put over 100k trouble free miles on it so far with only basic maintenance.

About the only really bad thing I can think of (beyond normal rental car shenanigans) is customers may be driving in 4WD when they shouldn't. Deal breaker?

I just picked up my SR5P with the 3rd row and 4x4 for 36900 after tt&l. Thats with 6.5% on the sales tax. I worked the initial bidding process through multiple dealers with truecar.com. Seems like a good price to me.

So about ~34.5k for an SR5 premium with 4WD and rear seats? Any other options/fillers in that price?

Zero other options. The aftermarket has the same stuff for less. Took about month to do the deal and get a unit on the lot. I didn't get all I wanted for the trade but it was close. I'll miss my TRD Taco but this was the right move.
