How much are people paying for the NEW 4Runner?

How does it work if I am trading in on 4Runner for a 4R in the port or its at another dealer? When I go make the deal do I leave my trade in there until my 4R gets in or the deals not made till it arrives? And do you get any MSRP discount when you are getting directly from the port or from another dealer? Thanks for your help.

edit: and when are the 2020s coming out? Have seen a lot of the discounted trucks on here have kdss and moonroof, which I don't want either.

in southeast and I got my 2019 off road premium with KDSS and moon roof/sliding cargo rack for 41500 OTD, before taxes/fees I think the base price after negotiation was about 39500

What was MSRP and OTD means nothing with different tax rates / fees, was a trade involved and what was $$ before tax title etc
I'm not sure on msrp. I'll have to look at the paper. How does otd mean nothing? 7% tax is alot of money on a 35k vehicle. Yes a trade was involved but this price is before trade

It just means that without including more of the breakdown OTD doesn't help much (and the same is true for MSRP without the OTD details). In my opinion OTD is the most helpful number as long as you also include details like MSRP, taxes, fees, trade, etc.

The trade in is important because most dealerships are happy to hide some of their profit in the trade. Give you less on your trade and a big "discount" on your new 4Runner. It's a lot easier to analyze someone's deal without a trade which is why it's good to mention. When I bought my 4Runner I didn't have a trade so the OTD price with the breakdown including taxes and fees is a lot easier to evaluate than yours is with a trade.

I negotiated the deal before any talk of my trade was brought up. I got my asking price on my trade. The final number I paid was lower than the number I listed above because of the equity of my trade.

As far as otd, it means that the price of the vehicle, the taxes, all fees, everything were included in the final price. So if the vehicle is 35k otd, that means paid around 32,700 plus the tax. The fees actually make it even less.

After the couple of thousand of equity in my trade, I paid around 33k in the actual check I gave them

wow, that's an insane price... $32.7k includes license/registration, destination, and fees?! so your actual sales price was less than $32k?

even though you had equity in the trade I can see why it's hard for some to believe (myself included) that the dealer didn't still low ball that side of the deal to make the numbers work.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a dealer in Florida? South Florida preferably? I've been contacting a few dealers and it's been such a pain talkong to these salesman. I told them upfront what I want and what I'm trying to be at numbers wise. I got to a price that looked like it was gonna work before TTL and the price went up $6k after taxes, title, dealer fees, etc. Tax alone should have been $2k more so their was still $4k in other fees. I told them nicely to go eff themselves.

Negotiate over email and ask about fees (ask for everything minus tax, title, license). That will save you a trip to the dealer. If they won't give you a price without coming in, try another dealership.

Florida has an insane median doc fee of $800. That doesn't mean you have to pay it though, that's still negotiable. Anything beyond that is all BS.

State by State Doc Fees

It depends on many variables. If the new one is coming in soon, then the dealer will probably give you a price on your trade. If it is going to take a long time (ie. the new one is on a boat coming over) then they won't be able to give you an exact figure until later because the miles and condition will change.

As far as price - everything except the government mandated fees (taxes, tags, title) are negotiable.

Sigh... The reason that OTD by itself is immaterial is because:

Each state has different tax rates. Some localities add tax as well
Some states tax the full amount while others only tax the difference in value
Each state has a different cap on "doc fees". Some states have no cap.

Let me give you an example.

Let's say you buy a $40k MSRP car and you've negotiated a price of $35000. You have no trade, your state has a 4% tax rate and a locality rate of 4%(NY). Your state caps doc fees at $75 and title and tags are $300.

$35,000 x 1.08 = 38080 +75 = 38155+300=$38455 OTD

Same car, same deal, different state (MD). You have a trade worth $15,000. The tax rate is 6% and there is a tax credit for trades. MD caps the doc fee at $300

$35,000 +(20,000x.06=1200)= $36200 + $300= 36500 +300=36800 OTD

Without putting the two identical deals into context, it would appear as if the buyer in MD got a far better deal.

Accordingly, one really needs:

MSRP
Negotiated price
Trade allowance (plus Edmunds trade value)
Tax rate
Doc fee
Tag and title fees
OTD

I just bought a 2019 Sr5 4x4 a couple months ago in Tucson.

MSRP: $38300ish
Negotiated price: $34600ish
Trade allowance (plus Edmunds trade value): no trade
Tax rate: too much
Doc fee: $499
Tag and title fees: $700 (too much)
OTD: $38,672ish

ps, my first post!!

Great first post!

What you see here is that you got a $3700 discount from MSRP - about 10%

A note about doc fees. These are not mandated by the government but you also can't really negotiate them away.

The doc fee is really just profit for the dealer and dealers will always tell you "we charge everyone the doc fee."

That doesn't mean that you can't negotiate a lower price to account for all or part of the doc fee.

Let me give you an example. MD caps their doc fee at $300. Almost every dealer charges $299. Neighboring VA caps the fee at $900 (so $899) - a $600 difference and enough to drive 15 minutes to MD from the Northern Virginia area.

There are more NoVA dealers so they generally give slightly better prices before the doc fee.

Since the proper way to get a price is to email dealers, I have been known to go to my VA dealer and say "The MD dealer will match your price but they have a $299 doc fee. If you match their OTD price (at this point you can talk about OTD because you've already negotiated the price and value of your trade) then I'll buy it from you. In every case, the dealer has reduced the negotiated price by the difference - but the $899 line item for the doc fee remains.

Negotiate the price on the last open day of the month, this will help. Last day of the year is even better.

Doc fee is negotiable. Since everyone else probably just takes it, negotiating it away is probably more difficult than it should be.

The line item of "doc fee" will always be there. You can negotiate it off the price of the car but I'll bet you a dollar to a hole in a donut that the line item with their usual charge will be on the sales order.

Why? So that they can tell a customer "we always charge every customer a doc fee" hoping that will be enough for them to make more profit.

That line item will even say "not mandated by law"

What I did and hopefully others can maybe use the info. I had $39.5k to spend and wanted a 4r with 4x4. I contacted the local dealership and asked the price for a '19 4r off road with kdss. MSRP was $41500. Their email price was $39,500. I went in a few days later. Told the dealer i had $39500 to spend. I said to him i know he can get me OTD with the off road and kdss one for 39500 (i knew he couldn't that was way too low). After back and forth the lowest he said he can go was around $36kish before taxes and everything which would have been around $40k OTD. At that point i was like ok, i want that same exact discount (approximately $3700 off msrp) and all weather mats for an sr5 4x4.....

Couple hours later, drove off with left over $
