How much does a rear axle weigh?

I am doing a road trip down the west coast next month and found a 4.1 locker axle in Las Vegas for a good price. 93,000 miles roll over.

1) they won't let me see the third member because of the mess it would make. He warranties the product though. That isn't a deal breaker is it?

2) I was thinking of throwing the whole thing in the back and driving back to canada, or instead grabbing it on the way down and storing it at my friends house in la for a couple weeks. How hard would it be to get this thing in añd out of the back?

3) other option is to get someone to swap axles for me in Vegas. I won't get the electronics for the locker put in then but the axle will be in. Is it crazy to swap an axle and then do a trip down to Mexico? I'll have the drive to la to shake things out. I also presume I'd need an alignment with the new axle. How much should I expect an axle swap to cost? Anyone know a goodshop in Vegas that would do this? Or in la?

I'm going to all this trouble because it's about a third the price of what I can get up here in canada which is usually rusted too.

1- The rear ends on these trucks are solid i just bought a rear locker with a unknown amount of miles on it and besides that the bearings were shot, the gearing is tight and it doesn't make any noise.

2- If you have someone to help you move it, you should be fine.

3- I wouldn't swap and drive that far just for the unknown. I would pick it up and swap when you get home. Thats me tho.

If you load it in the truck, I'd put a piece of plywood under it (and secure it to the plywood) - when I drove 4 hours with mine in the back I'm pretty sure I dented the floor (all the weight is on 3 spots) and could not keep it from rolling a bit.

It was hell on my passenger rear seatback also - that side lays flatter than the other now...

I'm curious about this as well as I'm planning on picking up a used rear axle in Denver which is a few hours drive. No one answered the original question yet. How much does the rear axle weigh? Are we talking around 200lbs?

I don't know the exact weight, but the loading guys used a forklift to put it into my truck. I wouldn't even attempt to lift it by hand with the help of 1-2 other people, i just put it on a handtruck and i wheel it around.

It's gotta be 200 lbs with drums.

Yeah, I got mine at a Pull-A-Part; took everything I had to tip it up and over into a wheelbarrow and wheel it to the counter - would not have gotten it into the back of the truck without another person's help.

OP, if you can wait about an hour, I'll weigh everything at the shop.

I hauled an axle from Taco 2000 in the back of my runner. My neighbor (around the age of 65) helped me to load it up. It is not bad. Just two will lift it easily. I'd say it is about 75 to 80 Kg's. Just make sure to remove the drums to make it light. Also tie it down with straps. In an unlikely event, you don't want the axle to come at you!

That is a good find with 4.1 ratio! Enjoy your time here and take the axle to Canada and deal with it.

Just take the axle with the suspension links :-) Say the bolts at the axle are rusted

Pretty sure it's well north of 200lbs. I wrestled mine around this summer when I did my frame swap, and I wire wheeled and POR15'd the diff. I could barely pick up one end a few inches, and I'm no cupcake. I used a tranny jack to take it down and move it around.

The guy at the yard said it is about 250 lbs. It has the third member attached. He can put it in with the forklift but how do I get it out. I guess the shop I take it to will get it out. So I think I should get it installed in Vegas.

It's heavy. And not even Bullshitting. A lot easier with 2 people.

The housing is probably lighter than the carrier by a few pounds, the carrier weighs about 100lbs, maybe as much as 120lbs. The axles probably weigh 30lbs each, 40lbs at the most, shoes and drums if included will add about 40lbs. I would say in the neighborhood of 300lbs total weight.

The rear axle is light enough where I can pick up and move it around pretty easily (i work in an office and don't lift heavy things often). Put a tarp down and throw it in the back seat kinda thing...

I did it no problem a few weeks ago.

Also if you're in the Vancouver area, I'm gonna have an e-locker housing for sale with a barnes armored diff cover. Depending on how cheap your vegas guy is, it might be doable to do it up here.

EDIT: check online about importing the axle with you to mexico if you go that route. Mexican mechanics are way cheaper AND work on 4runners and other toyota 4x4s all day long

Weight depends on how complete it is. The housing itself is decently light, but add on the 3rd member, e locker actuator, brakes, axle shafts, etc and you're probably getting close to 300 lbs.
